Jamie Murray will embark on a new stage of his career when he returns to Wimbledon as the BBC’s dedicated analysis expert this year.
Murray etched his name into the history books as the first British player to claim a Wimbledon title in 20 years when he won the mixed doubles alongside Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic in 2007. The elder brother of British icon Andy enjoyed a remarkable career spanning two decades, amassing 39 titles before hanging up his racket in April 2026.
Yet for all of Murray’s achievements on the court, the Scot has endured a notably turbulent time away from it. Growing up in the shadow of one of the most recognisable figures in world tennis has not always made for plain sailing, after all.
That is to say nothing of Jamie’s more personal hardships, including a painful divorce after 15 years with his former partner. Here, Wales Online takes a closer look at the lesser-known details surrounding the retired star over the years.
Brotherly love
Sibling rivalries are hardly uncommon in any household, though they are undoubtedly heightened when trophies are at stake. It is difficult to picture a time when the Murray brothers were anything other than the close-knit pair they appear to be today.
Tensions did surface in 2008, however, when the siblings fell out over a playing commitment. Doubles specialist Jamie was left incensed after his younger brother Andy withdrew from their first-round Davis Cup clash against Argentina at the 11th hour.
Left without Andy, Jamie was forced to pair up with late replacement Ross Hutchins. Team GB were soon knocked out of the competition by the eventual runners-up.
Andy’s last-minute withdrawal sparked a feud that left the brothers not on speaking terms for several weeks. Despite the prolonged silence between them, both Jamie and Andy showed little reluctance in taking aim at one another through the press.
I think it’s disappointing he chose not to come,” Jamie said of his younger brother’s decision. “It kind of affects the way we feel about him. From what I’ve been reading he hasn’t come out and said he’s injured, it’s more of a prevention thing. I think if he had really wanted to push himself he could have come here for the match.
“If he had come here, he would have caused them problems because he has the ability to win singles matches, he’s a world-class player. He’s been in the top 10 and not by fluke.”
Andy was quick to hit back as he responded: “He obviously felt pretty strong about it and he’s entitled to his opinion. If he knew what it was like playing three five-set matches in a row on clay then maybe he’d understand my position a little bit better.
“I guess we’ll have a chat about it and just discuss our feelings on Davis Cup. But it’s probably not going to be the most fun conversation to have with your brother.”
That conversation failed to materialise for a fortnight as the pair refused to speak to one another, leaving their mother and former coach, Judy, in an unenviable position. Yet, as with most sibling disputes, the brothers eventually managed to settle their differences and now appear closer than ever.
While 2008 may have been the brothers’ most public and seemingly most serious falling-out, the duo were far from harmonious during their childhood years. Judy has openly admitted on numerous occasions that the pair bickered constantly as youngsters, with their fiercely competitive natures frequently spilling over into physical confrontations.
Speaking on CNN’s Open Court show in 2015, their mother Judy said: “They had a lot of fun as well as a lot of fighting. I can’t say they even played or trained a lot together because they didn’t manage to last half an hour without fighting each other!”
She recalled one particular occasion when tensions reached boiling point as the brothers faced each other in a singles tournament: “The story that always springs to mind was when they played against each other at a tennis tournament. I’m driving back in the minibus and Andy had beaten Jamie in the final of this under-12 event.
“They start having a fight in the back of the minibus. Andy’s hand is over the back seat and eventually Jamie has taken enough and nails his fist into Andy’s hand. There was blood and I had to stop the bus. It’s a reminder about being humble and never bragging about beating anyone, especially your brother.”
Yet despite their rivalry, the brothers have long stood firmly in one another’s corner. Their mother Judy has acknowledged as much, noting that deep down they remain each other’s greatest supporters.
Council adjourned
Jamie once again found himself making headlines in 2019 when he stepped down from the ATP Player Council. The elder Murray brother, who had served as a council member for three years, cited “vendettas” and “people out for their own gains” as the chief reasons behind his departure.
He was one of four individuals to resign alongside players Robin Haase and Sergiy Stakhovsky and coach Dani Vallverdu. And Murray outlined his reasons following a gruelling seven-hour council meeting, adding further controversy to an already turbulent year for the ATP Player Council.
“The first two years I really enjoyed [being on the council], felt like I was able to accomplish quite a lot of things,” he said. “But the last year it’s kind of got political, people out there for their own gains, a few vendettas perhaps out there as well. For me we’re not accomplishing anything.”
Murray went on to elaborate: “I was fed up of sitting in these seven-hour meetings and coming out of it and not talking about the tennis, not talking about the tour. I’m not going to waste my time with that anymore.”
Without singling out any individual by name, he also hinted he felt certain council members had been acting in their own self-interest: “I think there’s a few people out there that are kind of trying to grab power and kind of push their own agendas, which personally I don’t believe in.
There’s a lot of good people out there that want the best for tennis but it seems there’s a small minority that maybe disagree with things.”
New Wimbledon career
This year’s Wimbledon tournament will mark the first time since 2006 that Jamie will not compete, excluding the 2020 edition, which was cancelled owing to the Coronavirus pandemic. The elder of the Murray brothers will still feature on our screens, however, taking up a dedicated punditry role for the BBC.

In 2025, The Sun reported Jamie and his wife, Alejandra Gutierrez, had parted ways after 15 years of marriage. The couple first crossed paths in 2008 while Gutierrez was studying business in Colombia and exchanged vows two years later in 2010 before going on to have a daughter together.
According to The Sun, the pair separated in 2024, with their divorce being finalised in August 2025. A spokesperson for Murray confirmed the rumours surrounding their split while also urging the public to respect the Brit’s privacy.
“Jamie and Alejandra Murray divorced on August 22, 2025, having separated the previous year,” they said. “As with any divorce, this is an extremely difficult time for Jamie and Alejandra and they would appreciate that their privacy is respected whilst they navigate their future.”
Game, Set, Matchmaker
The same report also revealed that, in the wake of the divorce, Murray had signed up to the celebrity-exclusive dating app Raya.
“It’s a really sad situation,” a family friend told The Sun following the divorce. “They’re working hard to make it as amicable as possible between them at this stage. Jamie’s started to make moves toward meeting someone new by signing up to dating sites.
