Filipinos provide massive and almost fanatical support to their tennis player Aleksandra “Alex” Eala, who in a short period of time became a national sports icon and caused a real tennis fever in her homeland.
After her historic successes on the WTA Tour, interest in tennis in the Philippines has grown rapidly, and the support of the public and the numerous Filipino diaspora is often compared to the euphoria that once accompanied the boxing legend Manny Pacquiao.

“Yeah, I would love to be home more often. The tour, as you know, is very demanding; I’m travelling a lot. So I definitely see Manila or the Philippines, the whole entirety of it in a different light every time I come back.
From what I’ve been told, it’s very difficult to get courts nowadays. Online I’m seeing everybody is playing tennis, people picking up racquets, of all ages.
I hear stories directly from them of how they have picked up tennis or other racquet sports and things like that.
I think tennis is well loved back home, and anything I can do to help that cause, you know, it’s my pleasure, yeah.” she said.
Speaking about the Philippine Women’s Open, a WTA 125 tournament that was held in the Philippines for the first time this year, Eala said that the event means a lot to her and that she is proud to have been part of its first edition.
Alex added that she heard many positive reactions from players and fans and expressed her hope that the tournament will be held for many years to come, as she believes that it will have great significance for the development of women’s tennis in the Philippines.
“Yeah, that was super meaningful for me to have that first WTA tournament at home and to be part of it. I think the leaders of Philippine tennis did a great job pulling that together. I heard loads of good feedback from the players and from the fans.
So I’m super happy that it pushed through. Hopefully it continues for a very long time. It was super meaningful for me, and I think especially for the Philippine tennis players and women’s tennis in the Philippines.” she concluded
