Carlos Alcaraz underscored his family’s special role in his life and how living under the same roof with them takes him back to his roots. For the 2026 Australian Open champion, returning home takes him back to his past and allows him to relive the experience of being a little kid.
The World No. 2 Spaniard was crowned the 2026 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year after orchestrating a landmark season last year. He ended 2025 at the top of the ranking with two Grand Slam singles titles, at the French Open and US Open.
After being recognised with the prestigious award, the 22-year-old opened up about the reason behind living with his father, Gonzalez, and mother, Virginia Garfia Escandon.
“Every time I go back home, it’s almost like I forget that I’m a tennis player. With my friends and my family, I’m still living in the same house as always, it’s like it takes me back to my roots, and I feel like the same “Carlitos” I was when I was a little kid,” Carlos Alcaraz said.
Along with Carlos Alcaraz, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka received the 2026 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award. Notably, the young Spanish sensation was also adjudged Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award in 2023.
