“Embarrassing to say this” – Fans turn on Alex Michelsen as heated moment with heckler at Mubadala DC Open sparks sportsmanship row

Alex Michelsen scored a battling two-set win over Adrian Mannarino in his second-round encounter at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open. The match had its fair share of drama, but the American managed to come through in a tie-breaker to take the win in straight sets.

During the encounter, a rogue fan kept interrupting the proceedings, heckling Michelsen. After the conclusion of the match, the youngster clapped back at the fan, saying “I’m tougher than you”.

Michelsen’s reaction, however, did not go down well with fans online. Many of them criticised the behavior, calling it “disgusting” and “frat-boy” like. A group even called out what they described as a pattern of poor sportsmanship from American players..

“Gosh these Americans and their frat boy alleged superiority are so disgusting . Mannarino is more of a legend than he will ever be,” a fan wrote.

“All the American Players (EXCEPT TOMMY PAUL) have no idea what Tennis Etiquette stands for and struggle to keep their mouths SHUT!” added another.”

Classic american sportsmanship!” echoed one more X user.

Another group also viewed the reaction as unwarranted, saying that Michelsen being the favorite to win the match had no business calling himself “strong”. One of the fans even asked the youngster to reflect on his poor form this 2026 season.

“Google Alex Michelson record in 2026 and let me know how tough he is,” a fan joked.

Alex Michelsen clarifies heckler incident with chair umpire

Alex Michelsen was approached by the chair umpire after his interaction with the heckler, with the latter inquiring if his intervention was required in the matter.

The American, however, clarified that he just wanted to address the fan since her “chirping” all match. He added that he addressed him only after winning the match and would not have done it had he lost,

“Nah he was just chirping all match, it was good,” Alex Michelsen said. “I’m allowed to say something back, so… No because I love it, I love it. It’s great. But when I win I’m allowed to say something. If I lost I wouldn’t say a word.”

Through to the quarterfinals, Michelsen will face compatriot and third seed Taylor Fritz for a spot in the last-four of the Mubadala DC Open.
