I miss It Every Day: Tennis Fans Emotional as Andy Murray Shares Serena Williams’ Heartfelt Admission About Missing the Sport
While Serena Williams, who retired after the 2022 US Open, surprised everyone by returning to the courts this season, Andy Murray has offered an interesting insight into the American legend’s mindset.
The two-time Wimbledon champion, who recently crossed paths with Serena at Queen’s, explained that the competitive fire still burns brightly within the former world No. 1.
‘She Misses Tennis Every Day’
In comments reported by the BBC, Murray recounted a conversation with Serena about retirement and the craving for competition.
“She asked me if I miss tennis, and I said, ‘No, honestly, not at all.’ Then I asked her the same question: ‘What about you?’ She replied, ‘Yes, I miss it every day. I love competing, I love playing.’
Seeing her back on court, playing doubles here and now at Wimbledon alongside Venus, is fantastic for tennis.
Achieving so much success in such a demanding sport and doing it for so long is extraordinary. But seeing that they still love the sport this much at this stage of their lives is truly beautiful.”
‘I Don’t Think I Could Come Back’
Murray, who ended his professional career in 2024, was also asked about the possibility of following Serena’s path and returning to play at age 44.
“Even if I’d like to be able to do it, I don’t think my body would allow me. I don’t miss tennis enough to want to step back on court, even just to hit a few balls.
I don’t mind watching matches from the stands or hitting a few balls in practice, but I don’t think that Andy Murray, at 44, will ever come back to play professional matches.”
