In an interview with The Telegraph, Andy Murray discussed his relationship with Jack Draper, who has fallen to No. 113 in the world rankings, and whom he has become a coach for.
He said: “I really like Jack and I wanted to help him when he asked if I could. But I was very clear about my limitations. Traveling every week during the season is not feasible for me right now, and that’s why coaching positions are rare.
The fact that I live 30 minutes away allows us to spend much more time together than with a Spanish or American player: that would be impossible, and I wouldn’t feel like I could really help him.
His tennis is fantastic. But obviously, he had a lot of injury problems last year. And I think he’s starting to recover now. The next step is to return to competition, to string together tournaments and weeks of play, and to regain confidence in his body.
He’s training and preparing for that (Eastbourne and Wimbledon). He’s been on court almost every day in recent weeks. I have great confidence in his tennis. In the practice sessions I’ve had with him, he impressed me more than I thought he would.
And I already thought he was very good before I started coaching him. He learns quickly. His game has very few weaknesses. He’s a more complete player than I imagined.
