“Just sue WTA”; “So messy” – Fans outraged over Elena Rybakina’s privacy breach with coach Stefano Vukov at Finals practice session

After Jessica Pegula’s incident, Elena Rybakina’s heated exchange with her coach, Stefano Vukov, caught on open WTA microphones, has stirred a massive debate about players’ privacy on social media once again.

During her practice session on Stadium 2 at Indian Wells, the World No. 1 was walking toward the net, midway through a session with Linda Noskova, when she stopped her coach and made a point that the WTA’s microphones were quick to catch on.

“Stay here. I’m talking to you,” she told Stefano Vukov. Seconds later, she added: “I’m talking to you! Can you stand over here?”

The first hot mic belonged to Jessica Pegula, who was caught lambasting the 2026 French Open champion Mirra Andreeva and her coach Conchita Martinez, clearly stating she had “lost respect for her.”

While the World No. 5 was talking about rivals, Elena Rybakina was not, a distinction the reports drew and much of the reaction picked up. As the French outlet Tennis Temple noted, players and coaches did not appear to be aware that their conversation would be on broadcast.

The clip kept circulating on social media, and by Thursday, the exchange had become the second flashpoint just three days before the year-ending showpiece event begins.

After two major incidents fans refused to pull punches while criticizing the WTA for attacking players’ privacy during practice sessions. Some believed it was an attempt to create drama while players naturally vent their frustration.

“Lol This finals is so messy already,” a user wrote on Reddit.

“This is so cringe. And WTA thinks this is great for the sport? Turning it into a circus for content?” a user remarked.

“Just sue WTA, ATP” a user stated.

“I really hate this. Turning private moments into a circus & dragging these players into scandal & setting them up for harassment,” a user noted.

“I hate this, too. It does nothing other than creating unnecessary drama…Players are human, too. Everyone expresses some sort of negativity in their private moments, it’s really no big deal!” another user added.

Elena Rybakina’s history with Vukov is why a routine moment traveled so far. The tour suspended Vukov in February 2025 after an independent investigation into his conduct toward her, and he returned to her team in August 2025.

The three-time Grand Slam champion claimed he never abused her and criticized the WTA’s disciplinary process. She then won the 2025 title in Riyadh, beating Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 7-6(0), and declined to pose with WTA chief executive Portia Archer during the trophy ceremony.

Elena Rybakina handed tough draw in WTA Finals title defense

Despite all the ruckus, the tennis itself has not paused. Elena Rybakina is in Group 1 with Coco Gauff, Pegula and Noskova. The opening assignment will be a tough affair for the top-seeded star, who will kick off her campaign against the Czech star on Sunday. Noskova, the reigning Wimbledon champion, is making her tournament debut, a fact that understates the difficulty of her draw.

Gauff and Pegula bring the hard-court pedigree. Pegula reached the final in Cancún in 2023 and knows the round-robin format, while Gauff is the one player in the group who has spent the past two seasons trading wins with the top of the tour. The top two from each four-player group reach the semifinals, so a single loss does not end a campaign, but the margins in a group this deep are thin.

Elena Rybakina arrives having already secured the year-end No. 1 ranking for the first time, with titles this season at the Australian Open, Stuttgart, the US Open and Ningbo, and a 54-14 match record according to Tennis Tonic.

She also withdrew from her Tokyo quarterfinal citing injury shortly after clinching the top spot, so her movement and serving load this week are worth watching.
