Andy Murray’s mistake and ‘it’s hard sometimes’ confession about wife Kim

Andy Murray’s mistake and ‘it’s hard sometimes’ confession about wife Kim

Andy Murray and his wife, Kim, are soon set to star in a new Channel 4 documentary about their luxury Scottish hotel, Cromlix. The couple have renovated the £1.8million Victorian mansion near Dunblane and are opening up its doors for a three-part special offering a behind-the-scenes look at the work they have done. Kim said: “The last couple of years have been really full of change at Cromlix with a huge building project and a totally new direction for fine dining and wellness, and I was really keen to document that as there were so many personal stories and interesting discoveries along the way.

“Andy and I haven’t worked on anything together before, so that was a fascinating process – and a learning curve! I’ve loved shaping this building and estate into what’s now become a really thriving and much-loved Scottish business.

I hope people enjoy watching the show and meeting the team behind the hotel.”

But how long have the two been together? The two-time Wimbledon winner has been married to Kim since 2015, having first met her at a US Open event a decade earlier. The couple tied the knot in Murray’s hometown of Dunblane after nine years of dating.

However, their relationship wasn’t always smooth sailing. While travelling across the globe and juggling a gruelling schedule as a tennis icon, Murray and Kim’s bond encountered several obstacles over the years.

But as the Scotsman has revealed, their union has given him stability. Murray and Kim have four children, Sophia, Edie, Teddy, and Lola, creating a strong family foundation. But matters could have looked considerably different after the couple’s brief split.

Separation from Kim

In 2009, Murray and Kim chose to go their separate ways. The break-up seemed so final that Kim even took custody of their pet dog, Maggie. However, they reunited six months later, with Murray admitting at the time that he functions better with his partner by his side.

After getting back together, Murray said: “I work better in a relationship. At the end of the day, especially if I’ve lost a match, I don’t like talking about tennis, so it’s nice to have someone to talk to about other stuff.”

Reflecting on Kim’s character, he told the New York Times: “She doesn’t like being in the newspapers, and people commenting on what she’s wearing and how she looks, and those sorts of things.

“That’s one of the things that I guess she’s also sacrificed, a little bit, for our relationship, and I appreciate that a lot. But Kim’s always been there for me.

“She really cares about me and helps with so many things. She always has. That’s why we have such a great relationship.”

Costly blunder

Murray has openly acknowledged the significant mistake he made following his brief split from Kim. Looking back on the break-up during his Centre Stage show at the New Wimbledon Theatre this year, Murray laid bare his impulsive behaviour as a newly single man.

“I bought a Ferrari. I called it Barry the Ferrari,” he said. “I thought it was cool, but it didn’t last very long. The first day I took it out to drive, it got pulled over by the police because the insurance hadn’t cleared. I got rid of it over a couple of months, because it wasn’t really me.”

The brief episode not only revealed an unexpected and rather spontaneous aspect of Murray’s character but also underscored his comments that he performs more effectively with Kim at his side.

The brief split with his now-wife proved pivotal, as Kim eventually steered him back on course, and the pair thrived together before ultimately building a family.

Candid reflection

Murray paid warm tribute to Kim’s steadfast backing last year. Since retiring he has taken part in various golf pro-am tournaments, most notably the Alfred Dunhill Championship in Scotland, where he drew interest while playing alongside English professional Eddie Pepperell.

Murray recognises he could not have reached such heights without his partner’s support, telling The i Paper: “Kim has been unbelievable when it comes to supporting me throughout my career. She’s been the perfect supporter. She really encouraged me to keep pursuing my career.”

Speaking about the challenges they face, he added: “It’s hard sometimes because we have quite a few kids, but we try and make time for lunch or going to the gym together when the kids are at school.

“I think making time for one another is important. You shouldn’t feel guilty about that. My ambition is to try and be a good dad and a good husband, and when the kids are more grown up and are able to take care of themselves, then I’ll focus a little bit more on what I want to do with that stage of my life.

“But right now, I’m really happy doing what I’m doing. It’s a big responsibility bringing up children.
