“What is wrong with you?” – Serena Williams’ coach furious over Elina Svitolina facing serious criticism for Gael Monfils separation decision
Serena Williams’ coach Rennae Stubbs was recently left furious as Elina Svitolina faced criticism over her separation from Gael Monfils. As a fan on social media tore into the Ukrainian tennis star for her decision, Stubbs was quick to come to the 32-year-old’s defense.
Svitolina and Monfils announced their divorce in a shared Instagram post on Monday, October 19. Svitolina highlighted the emotional toll that the war in Ukraine took on her mental health as the reason behind their split, while emphasising that the couple would go on to parent their daughter Skai together.
Reacting to the news of Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils’ divorce, an Instagram Threads user harshly criticized Svitolina for her decision, writing,
“She’s obviously not who we thought she was. She’s a selfish, self centered fool. She does not deserve what she has. Shame on you Elina.”
Reacting to this, Serena Williams‘ coach Rennae Stubbs rushed to Svitolina’s defense, writing,
“Wow imagine thinking to yourself ‘yeah I know more than her or Gael about their relationship, and feel like I should interject how terrible a person she is’…when you have no idea about either of them as people or their marriage. Like what is wrong with you? What is wrong with people on social media? Think you can go on and say anything you want about anyone when you have no idea what’s going on in people’s lives!!!!! Seriously grow up!!”
Stubbs and Williams first worked together during the 2022 US Open, which marked Williams’ final event on the WTA Tour back then. The duo recently reignited their partnership as Williams made her comeback to tennis after four years of retirement.

On the tennis end of things, Gael Monfils recently called time on his sporting career, with the US Open marking his final appearance on the court and reports linking his divorce to his abrupt retirement. Meanwhile, Elina Svitolina was last seen in action at the Wuhan Open, where she made a quarterfinals appearance.
