Just In: Tennis Fans Deeply Concerned as Elena Rybakina Is Set to Undergo a Period of Treatment as a Huge Tournament Is Sacrificed
The Billie Jean King Cup Finals will take place from September 21-27 in Shenzhen, China, with some of the best players in the world taking to court for their country. World No.1 Elena Rybakina was supposed to be one of them, but she has been forced to withdraw from the tournament as she recovers from her US Open triumph.
According to the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation, Rybakina will make her way back to Kazakhstan with the intention of conducting master classes for young tennis players, sharing her experiences, and meeting with fans. All in the wake of her most recent major title success, but there is another motive.
All of this did not seem possible at first. Rybakina was forced to retire from the Cincinnati Open quarter-final against Iga Swiatek due to an achilles injury. The tennis world held its breath as Rybakina was assessed ahead of the event.
Her preparation was slightly marred, but she was still able to ease herself into the tournament, flawless until three-set wins over Zheng Qinwen and Coco Gauff set her up with a final test against the reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka.
While having already confirmed to be the new number one in the rankings, the 27-year-old was determined to add a third Grand Slam title to her collection, and she did just that with a blistering finish to a high-quality match. It was Sabalenka’s first defeat at Flushing Meadows since the 2023 final.
However, it has not been smooth sailing. Painkillers managed to hush an ongoing leg problem that Rybakina was forced to deal with throughout the event. Recovery is now the main focus, with her set for a two-week spell indulging in rest and replenishing before the Asian swing and WTA Finals.
This means that the Billie Jean King Cup Finals will come too soon for her. She confirmed the news with a message on Instagram. “I have to announce that I won’t be able to participate in Billie Jean King Cup this year. Am very sad to miss Shenzhen, such a nice place with an amazing crowd. Last month has been tough for my body and I will need to recover and be at my best to compete again. I wish girls good luck.”
A bitter blow not just for her, but for her country as well, who were desperately relying on her prowess on court.
Aside from Rybakina, their lineup is not as strong as the other nations. Yulia Putintseva is now their main singles option, but she is not the player that she used to be. Anna Danilina, Zhibek Kulambayeva, and Sonja Zhiyenbayeva also feature. Nevertheless, they did qualify for the Finals without their top player, defeating Canada in the process in a hugely impressive result. The aspiration is to do it again, but it will most certainly be a tricky challenge with Spain up first.
Rybakina eyeing tennis return in Asia
It is a shame not just for Rybakina but for the tournament that she cannot feature in. She would have boosted the event while getting more people to follow it amid her rising esteem. Despite this, it will not be long before she is hitting a ball in anger on court once more.
There is a double-header of WTA 1000 events coming up, and Rybakina will be determined to challenge and ideally win both of them. First up is the China Open. Rybakina debuted in this tournament in 2023 with a semi-finals run before exiting at the third round stage last year.
Following that is the Wuhan Open. Rybakina has also played in this one twice, both quarter-final showings in 2019 and 2025. This time last year, she was making a desperate last-gasp dash to qualify for the WTA Finals and did just that with the Ningbo Open title and a semi-final run in Japan. She is unlikely to prioritise these events for the time being with the WTA 1000 tournaments taking precedent.
Above that, her WTA 1000 title defence will be the most crucial of the lot. After soundly getting the better of Sabalenka in Saudi Arabia, she will be among eight of the best WTA players on the planet to traverse to Indian Wells to compete for the title. Having already qualified, it is a stark contrast from last year. However, there is still a lot of tennis to be played out before that point, and Rybakina will hope her injury woes are behind her by that point.
