“36 hours, no food” – Taylor Townsend shares update after emergency surgery & mystery health scare in middle of Guadalajara Open
After having a terrific US Open campaign and winning the Women’s doubles alongside Katerina Siniakova, Taylor Townsend didn’t take much of a downtime. She immediately flew to Mexico for this week’s WTA 500 tournament in Guadalajara.
There, Townsend, ranked No. 98 in singles and No. 2 in doubles, defeated Tatjana Maria 6-7(0), 6-3, 6-2. Before facing top seed Marta Kostyuk in the round of 16, the 30-year-old had to withdraw from the tournament for emergency surgery. The American then sent an official statement dedicated to her fans, stating the reason for her exit.
“Because of emergency surgery, I am forced to withdraw from the GDL Open, and it breaks my heart. But I’m looking forward to coming back next year to see all of you, the greatest tennis fans. Viva México!” Taylor Townsend wrote.
On a lighter note, Townsend also sent a more casual message, sharing her condition at the hospital.
“I am coming up on over 36 hours. No food. I was finally able to drink something, but I am just going to disappear into this bed. You see the crack over there? I am just gonna fall right through that,” Townsend said.
Townsend also shared a sweet note from her son, A.J., amid her hospital emergency. She revealed her son has asked the former Doubles World No. 1 to “flex up and be strong”, so she would do exactly that.
How has motherhood impacted Taylor Townsend’s perspective of tennis?
The 30-year-old US tennis professional views her career in two halves. One, before motherhood, and one after motherhood. Townsend has reached new career heights ever since she welcomed her son A.J. into this world.
“Motherhood has taught me that there’s something much bigger than tennis. For me, it was something bigger than the sport, and it gave me a lot of perspective to understand that a win’s a win and a loss is a loss, but it stops there,” she said.
Taylor Townsend has had a terrific season so far. She has won the US Open and the Roland Garros doubles title in the 2026 season.
