US Open winner forced into emergency surgery just days later and issues statement
Taylor Townsend has been forced out of the Guadalajara Open, with the American undergoing emergency surgery following her withdrawal from the tournament. Townsend recently completed the career Grand Slam in doubles at the US Open and returned to action at the WTA 500 event in Mexico earlier this week.
She battled back from a set down to beat Tatjana Maria in her opening singles match, setting up a second-round meeting with Marta Kostyuk. However, the latter made it through to the last eight without playing a point due to Townsend withdrawing before a ball had been hit.
Kostyuk was therefore awarded a walkover and will go up against eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova in the quarter-finals.
It wasn’t immediately clear why Townsend had decided to pull out, but it’s now been confirmed that she underwent emergency surgery. The reason for the procedure is yet to be revealed.
Townsend announced the news on her Instagram story, writing: “Welp… this s*** definitely wasn’t on my bingo card. Through trials and tribulations… still I rise. I’ll update y’all soon.”
She also shared a post from the tournament which contained a statement that read: “Hi everybody, on the heels of achieving my first career Grand Slam at the US Open, I was so excited to play in front of you all at Guadalajara.
“Because of emergency surgery I am forced to withdraw from the GDL Open, and it breaks my heart. But I’m looking forward to coming back next year to see all of you, the greatest tennis fans. Viva Mexico.”
Townsend is a very competent singles player with a current ranking of 96, but has been more successful in doubles throughout her career.
She is ranked second in that category and wrapped up her career Grand Slam by winning the US Open alongside Katerina Siniakova, the world No 1, last weekend.
They initially won Wimbledon in 2024 before claiming the Australian Open title seven months later and the French Open earlier this year.
Their victory at the US Open also saw Siniakova complete her second career Grand Slam, having previously achieved the feat alongside fellow Czech star Barbora Krejcikova.
