Arthur Fery features on a list of 16 players fined during the 2026 US Open because of an audible obscenity during his first-round defeat to Lorenzo Musetti. The Wimbledon semi-finalist lost to the 13th seed in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5, in his main-draw debut at Flushing Meadows, and first Grand Slam match since replacing Cameron Norrie as the British No. 1.

Fery, 24, was fined £3,686 ($5,000) for violating code section III K, which concerns audible obscenity in the Grand Slam Code of Conduct, and states: “Players shall not use audible obscenity within the precinct of the tournament site.” Audible obscenity is defined as “the use of words commonly known and understood to be profane and uttered clearly and loudly enough to be heard by the chair umpire, spectators, line umpires or ball persons.

The world No. 33 faced a maximum fine of £36,855 ($50,000) for the violation, but was penalised only a tenth of that amount. Luisina Giovanini was not so fortunate, though, after being fined £14,748 ($20,000) for violating code section III G, which concerns first-round performance.

It states: “All players are expected to perform to a professional standard in every Grand Slam Tournament match. With respect to the first-round performance in the qualifying and main draw, if in the opinion of the referee the player did not perform to the required professional standard, the referee may determine that the player be subject to a fine of up to the first round prize money.”

Five factors the referee may consider when making that determination include “the player did not complete the match”, which Giovanini did not, retiring just 12 minutes in her first-round qualifying match against Lucia Bronzetti. They have not lost all of their £23,597 ($32,000) prize money, but deducting the £14,748 ($20,000) fine leaves them with just £8,849 ($12,000)..

Corentin Moutet received the next-highest fine for violating code section III C, which concerns dress and equipment, during his first-round match against Dane Sweeny. He was penalised £7,376 ($10,000) and was also docked another £3,688 ($5,000) for abuse of racquets or equipment.

The latter, a violation of code section III O, is by far the most common one. With ten other players violating it: Arthur Fils (£3,688 ($5,000)), Arthur Gea, Dalibor Svrcina (£3,688 ($5,000)), Francisco Cerundolo (£3,688 ($5,000)), Luciano Darderi (£3,688 ($5,000)), Otto Virtanen (£1,844 ($2,500)), Sebastian Ofner (£1,844 ($2,500)), Tristan Boyer (£1,844 ($2,500)) and Vilius Gaubas (£1,844 ($2,500)).

The four others fined are Belinda Bencic (£3,688 ($5,000)), Jaime Faria (£5,532 ($7,500), Polina Iatcenko (£3,688 ($5,000)) and Thiago Seyboth Wild (£1,844 ($2,500)), taking the total to £68,247 ($92,500). Faria, like Fery, was penalised for audible obscenity; Bencic and Seyboth Wild were penalised for unsportsmanlike conduct, while Iatcenko was penalised for coaching.
