Just In: Coco Gauff in ‘tears’ over US Open accident involving her physio getting hit on the face

Coco Gauff was left in tears after a frightening accident at the US Open that saw her physiotherapist, Maria Vago, narrowly miss a fierce return strike on her face. Gauff faced Iva Jovic in the fourth round at the US Open.

Despite a shaky start, where she dropped the first game on a double fault, Gauff clinched the first set 6-1. With long rallies, including a 24-shot rally in the second set, the American tennis player prevailed over Jovic 6-1, 6-4. During one of the instances in the match, the American returned the ball so hard that it landed in the stands, where her team was sitting.

Although the ball did not injure anyone, it brushed past Gauff’s physiotherapist close enough to send a scare. The ball hit Vago’s cap and travelled ahead, prompting a reaction from the two-time Grand Slam champion. Sharing one of the captured moments of the incident on her Instagram story, Gauff wrote:

“Oops,” and added two ‘tears’ emojis

She also shared a video and tagged her physiotherapist, while again adding the tear-eye emojis

After her win over Iva Jovic, Coco Gauff reached the 12th Major quarterfinal of her career. In an interview with WTA Tennis, she stated that advancing to a Grand Slam quarterfinal no longer feels overwhelming because she has reached the stage multiple times before.

“That doesn’t mean I’m — I’m very lucky to play, be here in the quarterfinal. Obviously, I hope to play many more, so I think it’s the fine line of appreciating the moment. I think so many people would love to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal, but also knowing that I put myself in this position so many times that I should almost be used to it.”

Coco Gauff will face the French Open champion Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinal round of the US Open.
