Monday provided some shock results with Naomi Osaka and home country favourite Learner Tien bowing out in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, a row could be threatening to blow out with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz reportedly stepping away from a group of players, including Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner, which has been calling for an increased prize pot for Grand Slams. Naomi Osaka trolled for outfit
The Japanese bowed out in the Round of 16 to Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina on Monday. The Ukranian moved in to the last-eight in straight sets, dispatching the two-time US Open-winner in just over an hour.
But she stole the headlines during her approach to the court with her trademark fashion statement. Although, it remains to be seen whether it had the desired effect as fans trolled the 28-year-old’s style.
She made her way onto the Louis Armstrong Stadium wearing an oversized hooded coat lined with thick faux-fur and a flamboyant skirt. But viewers were quick to point out that the daring design may have been a distraction, one wrote: “Osaka comes out in a ridiculous coat and gets absolutely smoked in 1st set. Maybe leave the ludicrous bling in the locker room.”
Player in tears after dream ends through injury
Anastasia Potapova was in tears after a horror injury against Mirra Andreeva, 19. The 25-year-old was returning a forehand during the deciding set when she was left in a heap, clutching her right leg.
Andreeva rushed to the Austrian’s aid, assisting the trainer with ice during the medical timeout. Potapova returned to court in a spirited display but she bowed out of the tournament after two hours and 26 minutes.
The Louis Armstrong Stadium rose to its feet to show their appreciation to Potapova. For the 19-year-old, she will face Coco Gauff in Wednesday’s quarter-final.
