Just In: Carlos Alcaraz puts tennis media to shame, calls out fake news ahead of US Open QF vs Ben Shelton
Carlos Alcaraz bluntly dismissed a quote attributed to him by a prominent tennis media establishment amid his title defense at the 2026 US Open. The former World No. 1 Spaniard, who entered this year’s New York major after a lengthy layoff with a wrist injury, has been in sparkling form, which has seen him set up an eagerly-awaited quarterfinal clash against home hope Ben Shelton.
On Monday, September 7, the Instagram handle of Tennis TV, the ATP Tour’s official live video streaming service, shared a carousel post consisting of a number of quotes attributed to Alcaraz following the career Grand Slam winner’s fourth-round win over Tommy Paul. The first picture featured the following quote:
“I feel capable of winning the tournament.”
Around eight hours after the post was shared, Carlos Alcaraz entered the comments and bluntly wrote:
“I didn’t say that
At the time of writing, Alcaraz’s comment has garnered well over 1,000 likes and more than 30 replies from various tennis fans, with many of them supporting the Spaniard’s blunt response to the post.
On a more serious note for the 23-year-old, top 10 rival Ben Shelton awaits him in the 2026 US Open’s men’s singles quarterfinals. Shelton himself was full of praise for the way Alcaraz has played so far in New York this year considering the Spaniard’s four-month-plus tour-level singles absence prior to the tournament.
