BREAKING: Why All This Hate Against Her? Jelena Ostapenko Publicly Exposes Death Threats and Fat-Shaming Abuse Unleashed on Her After Her Shocking Canadian Open Loss
Following her first-round exit at the Canadian Open, Jelena Ostapenko revealed the harsh reality of professional sports by sharing the abusive and derogatory messages she received from online critics. Following her third-round exit at the Wimbledon Championships, Ostapenko entered the National Bank Open.
The Latvian tennis player locked horns with China’s Zhang Shuai. However, after trailing 6-0, 4-0, Ostapenko retired from the match, leaving Shuai to advance to the next round. Soon after her withdrawal, the 2017 French Open winner received a huge backlash, with trolls sharing insulting and threatening messages. Many comments mocked her appearance and weight, stating she wasn’t fit to compete on the professional circuit.
However, Ostapenko stood up to the trolls by sharing their messages on her Instagram stories and writing:
“These great messages that you receive after a very bad day on the court feeling not well (health wise) 🤢🗑️ I am sure none of you guys have an idea of what professional sports is.
This is what professional athlete has to face after almost each lossThis is what professional athlete has to face after almost each loss😭,” Ostapenko added.
One of the trolls stated that they hoped one of Ostapenko’s family members suffers a tragic death. The same critic also hoped for an injury to the tennis player. To which, she requested Instagram to take action.
“Also, life-threatening comments and messages @kingt_t,” she wrote. “@instagram please do something about this toxic profile not only to me but also to the other tennis players”
Zhang Shuai will face top seed Aryna Sabalenka, who leads the head-to-head record with 4-1.
