A Cebu archbishop urged young Filipinos to value character above trophies and fame, pointing to tennis star Alex Eala as an example of humility, perseverance and faith.
Archbishop Alberto Uy said the country needs role models whose lives inspire goodness, encouraging young people to admire not only success but also integrity and compassion.
“My dear young people, dream big, work hard, and never stop learning. But above all, build a beautiful character,” Uy said in a pastoral reflection.
“Trophies will one day gather dust, records will eventually be broken, and fame will fade,” he said. “But humility, kindness, honesty, perseverance, and faith will continue to touch lives for generations.”
Uy, who also plays tennis, said Eala represents more than sporting excellence because she has remained humble, disciplined and gracious despite international recognition.
He described the 21-year-old tennis star as cheerful, resilient and respectful, saying her character shines even brighter than her achievements on the court.
The archbishop said Eala reflects the best qualities of Filipinos, showing that true greatness comes not only from talent but also from the way people treat others.
“This is exactly what every young Filipino is called to do. Success is a blessing, but a life that inspires others to become better is an even greater blessing,” he said.
Uy prayed that Eala and other Filipino youth would become champions not only in sports or their professions but also in goodness, integrity and hope.
“If more Filipinos choose this path, I truly believe that the future of our nation will be brighter, stronger, and filled with God’s blessings,” he said.
Earlier Sunday, Eala advanced to the final of the Mubadala DC Open after defeating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the semifinals in Washington, D.C.
She is scheduled to face world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the final on Monday (Philippine time).
