‘That literally made me cry my eyes out’: Katie Boulter shares emotional reason she married Alex de Minaur early for her grandfather.
Katie Boulter has shared the emotional reason behind her quiet wedding to Alex de Minaur, ending questions about why the couple chose to marry on the same day as the Wimbledon men’s singles final. Some fans had wondered why they would pick a date when de Minaur could have been playing the biggest match of his career. But the real reason had nothing to do with tennis. Speaking to Vogue, Boulter revealed that the intimate church ceremony was planned so her grandfather, who has dementia, could be part of one of the most important moments of her life.
Why Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur chose an early wedding ceremony?
Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur exchanged vows at a small church in the Leicestershire village of Woodhouse before their larger wedding celebrations. While the timing surprised many tennis fans, Boulter told Vogue that the decision was made for a deeply personal reason.
Her grandfather has dementia, and the family was unsure whether he would be able to attend a later ceremony. That uncertainty led the couple to arrange a smaller wedding first so he could still be there.
Boulter said the morning of the ceremony became even more emotional than she had expected.
He told everyone at his care home that it was “wedding day”.
“That literally made me cry my eyes out,” Boulter told Vogue.
The original plan was for her grandfather to walk her down the aisle. However, because of mobility issues, that could not happen. Instead, he waited for her at the altar before handing her over to de Minaur. It became one of the moments Boulter says she will never forget.
After the ceremony, she shared a picture on X of herself holding her grandfather’s hand at the end of the aisle and wrote.
“Some dreams are about so much more than a wedding.”
“This was one of them. A moment I’ll carry in my heart for the rest of my life.”
Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur celebrated with family in Tuscany
The intimate church ceremony was only the beginning of the couple’s wedding celebrations. According to Vogue, Boulter and de Minaur later travelled to Tuscany, Italy, where they spent three days celebrating with family and close friends.
The second celebration gave the couple a chance to enjoy the occasion with a larger group after sharing the emotional first ceremony with their closest family members.
Boulter has also officially taken her husband’s surname. When she posted their wedding pictures online, she introduced the couple as “Mr and Mrs de Minaur.”
The British star and the Australian tennis player have been together for several years and announced their engagement before getting married this month. Their wedding story has now given fans a better understanding of why they chose a date that first raised questions, showing that the decision was driven by family rather than the tennis calendar.
