Just In: Fresh blow for King Charles over big Buckingham Palace decision

King Charles has faced a fresh blow after many people have disagreed with his decision not to call Buckingham Palace home. Just days ago, news broke that the monarch will not move into Buckingham Palace next year when the £369m refurbishment works are completed next spring.

The news, which came as part of the 2026 annual royal finance reports, saw mixed reaction from royal commentators. This is because the King and his wife Queen Camilla were originally believed to be planning to move from Clarence House to Buckingham Palace once the renovation was complete. Instead, the couple will now stay at their smaller London abode, rather than move into the 775-room Palace.

The Palace will, however, still be used as the home of the monarchy and will host state banquets, dinners, Garden Parties and investitures.

A Palace spokesperson said: “The Palace will continue in every traditional way to be the beating heart of the Monarchy, just not its resting head.”

While this may be the case, it seems that the public are divided over the decision, as shown by our very own Daily Express poll.

We asked our readers whether the King should live at Buckingham Palace, with 1769 voting yes.

1489 people voted no while 1 person said they were unsure.

The poll ran from 10pm on Thursday (June 25) to 11am on Sunday (June 28).

It’s feared the Palace may never be home to a monarch again, with Prince William – who will be King after his father – also having no plans to live in Buckingham Palace.

Instead, it is believed William and his wife Princess Catherine will stay at their Forest Lodge home in Windsor, which they renovated and moved into last year.

It is believed they view the mansion as their “forever home”, even when William is King.
