Former Cyclist Explains Why Rafael Nadal Is Not a Role Model for Young Athletes — He Sets a Dangerous Example for the Young Ones
Rafael Nadal built one of the greatest careers in sports history through relentless determination, resilience and an unmatched willingness to compete through adversity.
However, not everyone believes young athletes should follow every aspect of the Spaniard’s example, including Jerome Pineau.
Former professional cyclist praised Nadal’s talent, work ethic and mental strength. However, he argued the King of clay’s willingness to continue competing despite significant physical pain, describing it as the wrong message to developing athletes.
Jerome Pineau praises Nadal’s mentality
The Frenchman made it clear that he has enormous respect for the Spaniard’s achievements and incredible competitive spirit. Jerome described Rafa as an extraordinary example of dedication, resilience and professionalism.
Throughout his career, Rafa repeatedly found ways to remain competitive despite chronic injuries and physical setbacks that would have forced many athletes into early retirement.
His ability to overcome adversity became one of the defining features of his legacy.
Pineau questions Nadal’s approach to playing through pain
While admiring the mentality of the 22-time Major champion, the former cyclist believes young athletes should learn to listen their bodies rather than push through significant pain while trying to chase their goals and dreams.
Jerome argued that constantly managing injuries and continuing to compete despite physical limitations and setbacks should not be presented as the ideal path for developing players.
The comments are likely to spark debate among sports fans. Rafa’s remarkable ability to compete through injuries has long been viewed by many as one of the greatest examples of toughness and determination in modern sport.
The Mallorcan extended his career and battled through various injuries before retiring at the end of 2024 when his body could not endure the efforts anymore.
“No, Rafa is not a good example for young athletes. I will just say that in what he does, what he says, if he is a cyclist, he is condemned for having played while using painkillers. The rules are not the same for everyone.
Obviously, in terms of resilience, talent, and work ethic, there’s no problem; he is an example. However, he can not be an example when it comes to not listening to his body, pushing himself further into pain, creating new ailments to treat a long-standing problem.
I’m one of those who say to myself, ‘I play sports at a very high level, but if I have a problem, I get treatment, I stop, and I start again when I’m healed,’” Jerome Pineau said.
