Just In: Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s ‘terrible burden’ exposed
Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are carrying a “terrible burden” about their father Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, according to the ex-BBC booker behind his notorious Newsnight interview. Andrew’s two daughters have kept a low profile since his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office in February, and stayed away from the traditional royal gathering on Easter Sunday, with the agreement of King Charles.
The sisters, whose own names appeared in the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) tranche of files on the late paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, are continuing to struggle with the latest revelations about their parents’ links to the sex offender, according to Sam McAlister.
Ms McAlister, who also penned Scoop, a book about the trainwreck interview, said the Epstein files had revealed “some very unpalatable things” about both Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, with the latter exposed for asking the financier for money and describing him as a “supreme friend.
She told the New Chapters podcast: “It’s a terrible burden to have the cloud of this allegation hanging over your father… and then the Epstein files have revealed some very unpalatable things about their mother’s behaviour.”
She added: “Many will see them as immensely privileged young women moving in circles of money and power that most people can only dream of.
“[But] I do think they are in a very difficult position with their parents. Every day, there is a new revelation, and you can only imagine the burden that places on them.”
Among the princesses’ appearances in the thousands of emails released by the DoJ was a joke from Epstein about Andrew “selling his daughters” to pay off his ex-wife’s debts and Sarah telling the financier that she was “waiting for Eugenie to come back from a sh****g weekend”.
Another email exchange suggested Sarah took her daughters to see Epstein in the US days after he was released from prison for child sex crimes, when they were 19 and 20 respectively.
Andrew has always denied wrongdoing.
It comes after Eugenie announced her third pregnancy this week, with Buckingham Palace describing King Charles as “delighted” at the news.
In a statement, the palace said: “Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are very pleased to announce that they are expecting their third child together, due this summer.
“August (aged five) and Ernest (aged two) are also very excited to have another sibling join the family. His Majesty The King has been informed and is delighted with the news.”
The announcement was seen as a show of support for Eugenie amid the scandal surrounding her parents, with Andrew hiding out on the Sandringham estate following his release from police custody and Sarah vanishing from the public eye before being spotted at a £2,000-a-night ski chalet in the Austrian Alps last month.
