Just In: Donald Trump makes ultimate confession about mother’s ‘crush’ on King Charles
US President Donald Trump has revealed that his mother had a “crush” on the King when he was younger during a speech at the ceremonial welcome today in Washington. Speaking outside the White House, the US President said of his mother and the late Queen Elizabeth II: “My mother, I just see it so clearly, she loved, I told the King that she loved the Royal Family and she loved the Queen, and any time the Queen was involved in the ceremony or anything, my mother would be glued to the television, and she’d say ‘look, Donald, look how beautiful that is’.
“She really did love the family but I also remember her saying very clearly, ‘Charles, look young Charles, he’s so cute’. My mother had a crush on Charles. Can you believe it, amazing how… I wonder what she’s thinking right now.
The King was seen gesturing during Mr Trump’s speech.
Elsewhere, Mr Trump hailed the late Queen, calling her a “very special woman”.
He said: “We see today a living symbol of this centuries-old bond.
“Just a few dozen feet to the left where I stand – there her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth, an incredible woman who I had the privilege of getting to know.
Queen Elizabeth, the second, very, very special woman, who is very greatly missed on both sides of that mighty Atlantic, long ago planted a young tree.
“It was a very young and beautiful tree and look at it now.
The King and Queen were officially welcomed to the US with an unprecedented military ceremony on the White House lawn.
Charles and Camilla watched the display with their hosts, US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, alongside a group of invited dignitaries and hundreds of spectators.
As the National anthems were played, the sound of the construction works could be heard in the distance.
When the American anthem played, the President saluted, and the First Lady held her hand on her heart.
Mr Trump, wearing a bright red tie, then led the King as they inspected the troops standing on the lawn. The President saluted as he marched past at a quick pace.
