Tom Cruise and David Beckham’s Friendship ‘Under Strain’ After True Colours Emerge at Victoria Beckham’s Party
What was meant to be a glamorous celebration has reportedly sparked fresh tension between two of the world’s biggest stars. According to sources, Tom Cruise and David Beckham’s once-easy friendship is now said to be “under strain” following an unexpected turn of events at Victoria Beckham’s recent party.
As fans prepare to settle in for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics, some will be keeping an eye out for Tom Cruise. The Hollywood star is rumoured to be in attendance as a representative of the next summer games, which will be held in Los Angeles in 2028.

It isn’t the first time Cruise, 63, has had his sporting hat on. The actor has been spotted in attendance at NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL matches in the United States, often near his California home, while he regularly spends time in the UK and has been a regular in the Wimbledon crowd.
In years gone by, he was joined by former England captain David Beckham at some of those sporting events. However, the relationship between the pair is a complicated one.
The friendship between Cruise and the Beckhams is believed to have begun in the 2000s. As reported by Hello!, they became particularly close after the footballer and wife Victoria moved to Los Angeles in 2007 after a transfer from Real Madrid to LA Galaxy but Tom and David had been friendly before that relocation.
“I was on the phone to him for about an hour last night and the night before,” Beckham said in January 2007. “I asked for his advice because he’s a very wise man and a very good friend of mine. He couldn’t speak any higher about LA. It’s a big help to us to have friends in LA when we arrive.”
In Grant Wahl’s book ‘The Beckham Experiment’, Beckham admitted he and Victoria named their third child Cruz in honour of their friend. The British couple had attended Cruise’s wedding to Katie Holmes in 2006, with the couples remaining close in California and the actor attending Galaxy matches in Major League Soccer to cheer on his friend.
During their time as near neighbours in the States, Beckham and Cruise launched Midnight Boys Bike Club in 2010. The pair were even said to have matching F131 Hellcat Combat motorcycles at the time, while they were reported to have invited fellow A-listers including Orlando Bloom and Brad Pitt to join their elite group.
He’d call at 11 at night, and we’d just hang, no problems, just riding our bikes,” Beckham would later tell GQ while reflecting on his time hanging out with Cruise. However, there has since been a rift between the former friends.
Reports in the United States, citing unnamed sources, suggested Cruise’s involvement in the Church of Scientology was a factor in the rift with the Beckhams. Things appeared to have changed by 2024, when Victoria invited the Top Gun star to her 50th birthday celebrations, though Inter Miami owner David is said to see Cruise as someone best enjoyed ‘in small doses’.
While there, however, the actor is said to have hijacked the event with a dance which left Victoria’s former Spice Girls bandmate Mel B baffled. “We were at Victoria’s 50th birthday and her son, Cruz, started singing Mama on the guitar and David (Beckham) was like pushing us all up,” she said. “All five of us were singing and then Tom Cruise made a circle and he did that dance from that movie, for some reason.
“We were all like dancing away and he goes ‘Come on, man! Come on!’ He starts getting together this circle. So he goes in the circle first — Tom Cruise! — and starts doing all this…,” she said as she imitated Tom gyrating. Mel added: “I went ‘Oh my God!’ and that’s why I left the circle. It was the weirdest dance.”
Cruise still has a home in California and has been involved in preparations for the summer games coming to the Golden State. He performed a stunt at the closing ceremony of the Paris games in 2024 as part of a hand-off ahead of the next summer edition.
Rumours abound that he will be in Italy for Friday’s opening ceremony, with Snoop Dogg among the American celebrities to have already made the trip to Europe. He’ll need to be quick, though, with Deadline reporting that his attendance is in doubt after he was spotted out and about in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
