Breaking News: It Irritates me a lot – Andy Murray found ‘incredibly irritating’ about Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration
Andy Murray did not enjoy hearing Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous celebration.
Murray retired from professional tennis at the Paris Olympics in 2024, bringing an end to his decorated 19-year career.
The three-time Grand Slam champion has since shown interest in other sports, with Murray frequently playing golf.
Murray also enjoys football, and supports Scottish team Hibernian, having also spoken about having a liking for Arsenal, but it does not appear that he is as much of a fan of Ronaldo’s celebration.
Why Andy Murray was left annoyed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration
Murray was making his 14th appearance at the Australian Open in 2022, and he did so in style after knocking out 21st seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in a five set first round match.
Despite winning a four hour epic on John Cain Arena, Murray’s match was somewhat tarnished by the constant noises of ‘Siuu’ from the crowd, imitating the celebration made famous by Cristiano Ronaldo.
This continued into the post-match interview, and Murray appeared to mistake these chants for booing instead and said, “That’s painful stuff there. Those guys,” in his on-court interview.
Murray spoke about this in his post-match press conference, but still admitted that he found the chanting ‘incredibly irritating’.
“Initially, I thought it was, because there were some people booing during my practice yesterday,” said Murray. “I have no idea what for. Yeah, so originally that’s what I thought it was.
But then after a few times it was like, no, they’re doing that, I think it’s like ‘Siuu’ or something that Ronaldo does when he scores. And, yeah, it was incredibly irritating.”
What Nick Kyrgios said about fans doing Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration at the Australian Open
Murray was not the only player impacted by Ronaldo’s celebration at the Australian Open in 2022, with Nick Kyrgios also experiencing it during his first round match against Liam Broady.
This was particularly heightened when Kyrgios would serve an ace, which he did a total of 21 times against Broady.
While Kyrgios appeared to embrace the celebration on court, he admitted that he was shocked at how much the crowd were doing the Ronaldo celebration in his post-match press conference.
“No, they actually weren’t saying ‘boo’, it’s just a stupid, f***, I can’t believe they did it so much,” said Kyrgios. “They were doing some Ronaldo thing. Ronaldo does it every time he scores.
“I thought they were going to do it for like 10 minutes. They did it for two-and-a-half hours, like every point. I don’t know why, but I don’t know. It was a zoo out there.”
