Kate Devastating: How Prince William was ‘scared to commit’ sparking ‘Camilla to…

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William have been married since 2011, ten years after they first met at university in 2001. They have welcomed Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis into their happy family and their union is going from strength to strength. However, their path to wedded bliss hit some bumps along the way, and provoked worries that they could replicate what happened between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles.

Royal author Katie Nicholl, in her 2010 book “William and Harry”, describes how the royal couple had a “break” in 2007 after Kate had delivered an “ultimatum.

She explains: “Either she had his full commitment, or they were over.

The royal couple got back together in June of that year, but it had taken “weeks before Kate agreed to give William a second chance”.
Ms Nicholl continues: “[Kate] had been deeply affected by the break-up.

Kate’s friend Emma Style told Ms Nicholl: “When they got back together Kate said they had a lot of issues to sort out.”

Ms Nicholl adds: “Understandably, Kate wanted reassurances from William.

“For a young man who has an inherent fear of tomorrow this was not easy for William.
“[He] had inherited something of his father’s fear of commitment.

However the prince “knew he would lose Kate if he did not give her some form of guarantee”.

The pair made a “pact” on a romantic getaway to the Seychelles, and William “promised her his commitment”.
The reunion came after worries that William would miss his chance with Kate after putting their relationship on a “break”.

Ms Nicholl writes: “It was hard not to draw comparisons between William and his father.

“Had William also met the right woman at the wrong time?
“Haunted by the spectre of the past, there were real fears at the Palace that Kate would become the next Camilla.”

Prince Charles and Camilla had a romantic relationship in the early 1970s but Charles had been forced to call it off in January 1973 when he went on deployment with the Royal Navy.

The Prince of Wales was reportedly brokenhearted when Camilla then became engaged to marry Andrew Parker Bowles later that year.

However, their feelings for each other did not wane, which later caused problems in Charles’ marriage to Princess Diana.

In reference to Camilla, Diana famously told the BBC: “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall were eventually able to marry in 2005.
