A curtsy involves a woman or girl bending her knee and bowing her head in a deferential gesture of respect reserved for royalty. Men and boys offer a bow of the head.
According to the Royal Family’s official website, there are no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting the monarch or members of the Windsor family.
It notes many people choose to observe “traditional forms”, including a bow of the head only and a “small” curtsy. A shake of the hands is also another way of greeting a royal.
All royals are expected to bow to the King and curtsy to the Queen, with Prince William and Princess Kate regularly seen greeting Charles and Camilla in such ways.
However, the King and Queen are not averse to greeting family members with a hug and kiss on the cheek. Myka Meier told People magazine the general rule of thumb though is that a Royal Highness doesn’t need to curtsy to another Royal Highness.
