Serbia, especially the city of Belgrade, welcomed its heroes after the Paris Olympics, especially reserving a special tribute to Novak Djokovic. The Serbian champion won the only title that was not yet in his rich collection, winning the much sought-after gold medal in Paris and letting himself go to an emotional liberating cry at the end of the match. Even the collective embrace with his family will remain one of the most beautiful moments in the history of tennis.
In a speech to his fans – as reported by the British newspaper Daily Express – Djokovic reiterated that he will try to participate in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
“I will try to get to Los Angeles 2028. I would really like to. Representing Serbia at the Olympics is the greatest pleasure. This is the realization of a childhood dream for me. The pressure was enormous, because I had won more or less everything. Now I feel fulfilled, complete. We can celebrate,” he said in front of 50 thousand people, in the tribute received at the Old Palace in Belgrade.
In the meantime, Djokovic has decided not to take part in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, thus giving up the defense of the title. The Serb will return to the court directly at the US Open, where he will try to win the 25th Slam of his career.
In the meantime, the Serbian government has already taken action to celebrate with an extraordinary work the Olympic gold – and all the other historic successes – of Novak Djokovic. President Aleksandar Vucic announced from Belgrade that he had had the first technical meetings on the construction in honor and dedicated exclusively to Nole, which will be a new attraction for the entire capital.
It is the announcement that naturally aroused a lot of curiosity among the fans of the 37-year-old, who is enjoying these days the great goal sought and finally achieved in Paris 2024.
Mallorca has a museum about Rafael Nadal. We will make sure to show what Djokovic has done for our country, attracting tourists at the same time,” Vucic explained, hoping that the structure can be opened to the public from 2027.
“Novak is bigger than Rafa,” he then added, highlighting the record for the most weeks spent at the top of the ranking as world number one.
The 24-time winner of a Slam tournament has never hidden his great determination in wanting to defend the colors of his country and achieve important goals, such as that gold which he chased for a long time and finally snatched in France, perhaps with the last real opportunity of his career.
“I could never give up on the dream of winning this gold medal, just as the people of Serbia have never given up on me. Together, we believed in the impossible. While I may be the one holding this medal, I want every Serbian to know that it belongs to all of us. Representing our nation is the greatest honor in the world. This medal, these moments, this life, none of it would have been possible without your unwavering support. This is because of you. This is for you,” wrote Nole on Instagram.
Djokovic made a beautiful gesture the day after winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, dedicating an emotional post to the opponent he had to overcome to win the gold: Carlitos Alcaraz The Serb addressed Alcaraz directly, showing that he has a deep respect for him.
“Another epic final, Carlos. El Clasico. Congratulations to you and your team for an excellent Olympics you played. Considering your age, your energy and the way you play, you have maybe 20 more Olympics ahead of you! The gold medal will come your way. Until next time, buddy!” Djokovic wrote.
