Carlos Alcaraz recently left Andy Roddick in splits after a hilarious goof-up about his US Open quarterfinal opponent. After the Spaniard reluctantly admitted that he doesn’t know his own draw for the US Open, Roddick was left shocked at the revelation.
Alcaraz has enjoyed a dominant campaign in New York so far. The 23-year-old kicked off his time at the year’s last Major with a comfortable win over Roman Safiullin, before easing past Jamie Faria in four sets. The seven-time Grand Slam champion then went on to outdo Yibing Wu and 20th seed Tommy Paul in straight sets.
After his win over Paul, Alcaraz sat down for an interview with ESPN, where Andy Roddick questioned him about his upcoming quarterfinals encounter, asking,
“Looking ahead, you’re either gonna play Shelton or Tsitsipas. Maybe just a word on both of them and the challenges (they pose)?”
Carlos Alcaraz was left visibly confused by the question, and he struggled for a moment before admitting he didn’t know his draw, saying,
“Oh my god! Oh my god! I thought…I thought I was playing…. I mean both of them are… I didn’t see the draw!”
After the laughter over his admission died down, Alcaraz confirmed that he would be tuning in to Ben Shelton and Stefanos Tsitsipas’ match.
