We’re already into the round of 16 at the US Open, with the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka in action today. Alcaraz will go up against home favourite Tommy Paul for a place in the quarter-finals, while Sabalenka faces another American player in Taylor Townsend.

Ben Shelton‘s meeting with Stefanos Tsitsipas will be another interesting tie, with the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Jessica Pegula also set to continue their campaigns. Last night, fan favourite Alexandra Eala was dumped out by Iva Jovic in one of the tournament’s best matches so far, while Naomi Osaka scraped through against Elise Mertens via a third-set tiebreak

Alexandra Eala breaks down in tears

Alexandra Eala was visibly emotional following her narrow defeat to Iva Jovic overnight.

She ended up on the wrong side of a 7-5 3-6 7-5 scoreline, with fine margins deciding the result.

Eala struggled to keep it together as she waved to the fans on her way back to the dressing room.

After vanishing out of sight, she was caught on camera breaking down in tears and wiping her eyes.

Naomi Osaka issues grovelling apology

Naomi Osaka said she was “really sorry” for her behaviour on the court during her narrow victory over Elise Mertens.

She was visibly frustrated at times, even throwing her racket and berating herself at one point.

Afterwards, she said: “Honestly, I didn’t feel like I played amazing, and it was really getting me down, like I was very negative on myself, so I’m really sorry about my behaviour.

“For the little kids watching, I’m really sorry. This is my favorite tournament so I really wanted to play well in front of you guys.

“I’m really glad that I have an opportunity to player another match.”
