“Blatant disrespect” – Fans furious at US Open broadcasting for commentary on Naomi Osaka’s mental health, ignoring 3R telecast
Naomi Osaka booked her spot in the fourth round of the 2026 US Open with a solid victory against Elise Mertens on Saturday night. Unfortunately, her clash against the Belgian was marred by controversies on ESPN.
Osaka needed three sets to take out the No. 23 seed, winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. The Japanese dazzled fans beforehand with a unique walk-on outfit as well, one that drew the eyeballs of the tennis world.
On Saturday, as fans tuned into ESPN to watch Osaka, they noticed something in the commentary, with the broadcasters speculating on her ‘mental health’ as the reason for some of her poor shots. To add insult to injury, some fans also could not find any suitable viewing of the clash, as they could not find it on the regular program schedule.
Fans took to social media to voice out their criticism, defending Naomi Osaka and calling out the US Open broadcasters in the States.
“@espn and @usopen not cool at all when the broadcaster assumes Naomi Osaka is having a “mental health issue” simply based on how she is playing. Honestly, I just muted the TV because both commentators would rather express their opinions then give at least one stat,” one fan said

Five channels and @TSN_Sports is showing the same US Open game. I want to watch Naomi Osaka. Why do I need to pay more to watch that game… when you have five channels to show that game.

Naomi Osaka, in her post-match interview after the win over Elise Mertens in the US Open third-round, apologized to fans, stating that she was too ‘negative’ on herself — a behavior she did not want others to emulate.
The former World No. 1 added:
“This is my favorite tournament so I really wanted to play well in front of you guys. I’m really glad that I have an opportunity to play another match.”
