US Open LIVE: Top seed risks being disqualified as six matches cancelled
It’s been a soggy start to the 2026 US Open, with plenty of matches having been impacted by the wet weather in New York. It’s created a bit of a backlog that needs to be cleared, but the good news is that the forecast appears to be clearing up, with some sunshine even scheduled for later this week.
On the court, it wasn’t to be for Arthur Fery overnight, as his US Open campaign came to an end against Lorenzo Musetti. Following a fairytale run at Wimbledon, the Brit was unable to replicate his heroics and lost in straight sets to the Italian tennis ace.
There were no particular shocks during Tuesday’s action, although No.1 seed Alexander Zverev did need all five sets against Lorenzo Sonego to be sure of a spot in the second round. In the women’s draw, there were comfortable straight-set wins for Madison Keys, Iga Swiatek, and Mirra Andreeva.
Belinda Bencic risks disqualification
Belinda Bencic risked being disqualified from the US Open after hitting a ball into the crowd.
The 12th seed was beaten by Yulia Putintseva in her first-round encounter, but after losing a game in the second set, the Swiss ace launched her spare ball into the crowd.
She was handed a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct, but Bencic can count herself somewhat lucky.
Players in the past have been disqualified for hitting balls into the crowd, especially when they’ve hit people!
