Former British World No. 1 Andrew Castle recently made a bold prediction about Emma Raducanu’s career as she continues to recover from injury.
Raducanu was last seen in action at the HSBC Championships, where she enjoyed a strong run and reached the final. However, she fell short of winning the title after losing to Donna Vekic in the final on June 14. Following the tournament, she has been away from the court due to a lower-leg injury sustained during the final.
After undergoing medical tests, the injury was diagnosed as a stress fracture in her right lower leg. The setback forced her to withdraw from Wimbledon just hours before her opening match. She has also pulled out of the Canadian Open and the US Open as she continues her recovery. The US Open is scheduled to take place from August 23 to September 13 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Amid this, Castle recently made a prediction about Raducanu’s career, stating that she could announce a sudden and early retirement from tennis if her persistent physical setbacks continue to take a heavy toll.
“When she moves, when she plays, you can still see a really, truly, brilliant player there, so with a bit of luck, she will be back, and she wants to be back, because after a while, I would imagine it’s difficult to stay motivated. Well, put it this way. I mean, I’ve got no access to that camp whatsoever, but it wouldn’t surprise me if one day out of the blue, she just said, you know, ‘I’ve had enough of all this.’ I mean, don’t we all say that?” said Castle.
He added:
“She doesn’t have an obligation to anybody but herself and her family. That’s it. There is nothing else. All the sponsors and everybody else, they’re not the ones whose career this is. It’s her choice, but I mean, I hope she carries on.”
What Emma Raducanu said about withdrawing from the Wimbledon Championships
Emma Raducanu withdrew from the Wimbledon Championships just hours before her opening match against Antonia Ruzic on June 28. Wimbledon shared the Brit’s announcement on Instagram, where she expressed her disappointment over missing the tournament.
Revealing that she had been medically advised to stop pushing herself, she said:
“I can’t believe I’m saying this but sadly I’ve had to withdraw from Wimbledon. The niggle I’ve been managing has developed into a stress fracture and I’ve been medically advised to stop pushing through. Playing at Wimbledon means everything to me, so this is really difficult to process. I look forward to seeing you when I’m back.”
Emma Raducanu opened her 2026 season at the Hobart International, where she fell short of advancing beyond the quarterfinals after losing to Taylah Preston on January 15.
