Sad and Tragic: Madison Keys Heartbroken as She Finally Reveals How She Was the Victim of an Expensive Scam at the Canadian Open
Madison Keys recently revealed that she was scammed during the Canadian Open after ordering a luxury bag and receiving a box filled with tissues instead.
Keys suffered a second-round exit after losing to Marta Kostyuk (3-6, 3-1) at the Canadian Open on Friday. She is now preparing for the Cincinnati Open, where she is set to begin her campaign on Saturday.
Amid her preparations, Keys opened up about the experience during the latest episode of The Player’s Box podcast on Tuesday. Calling the incident “sad and tragic,” the American recalled how excited she was to receive the luxury bag she had ordered.
“My unforced error is kind of sad and tragic. It’s also very first world problems, but I got myself a nice little gift and I really like bags and so I was so excited about this bag that I ordered, but it had to be signed for and I’m out of town. So my friend comes over to my house is sitting at my house to sign for it and she’s so cute. She’s getting ready to send me an unboxing video and she’s doing it and I have my doorbell ring camera so I can see that it was like getting delivered and I was like ‘oh amazing, she can leave it’s great,’ whatever and all of a sudden I get these panicked ‘FaceTime me FaceTime me’ and I’m like that’s so weird,” Madison Keys said.
She added:
“It’s not a big deal and she’s like ‘there’s no bag in the box’ and I was like ‘what do you mean there’s no bag in the box?’ And she was like, ‘All there is is a bunch of tissue paper and a container of Clorex wipes.’ And I was like, ‘What? What do you mean?’ So, she sends me her unboxing video and she pulls out the bottle Clorox wipes. I still can’t believe it happened.”
Keys had opened her Canadian Open campaign on August 5 against Antonia Ruzic, defeating her 6-1, 6-2.
Madison Keys Opened Up About Her First-Round Win At The Canadian Open
After beating Antonia Ruzic, Madison Keys addressed the media in the post-match press conference, where she spoke about the victory. The American said she was pleased to get her first victory after transitioning from grass to hard court
“Overall, I feel like played pretty well today. It’s always good to get your first win after you’re switching surfaces again into the start of the swing. So, all in all, happy with the win and looking forward to the next round,” Madison Keys said.
She also discussed adjusting to the hard courts in Toronto after the grass-court season
“Feeling pretty good. I haven’t always done the best in Toronto. So, it’s good to get a win here and play some good tennis. So, looking forward to hopefully just kind of continuing to work on some of the things that we’ve been working on and actually implementing those in matches, which I think I did pretty well today. And just kind of keep that as the core focus moving forward.”
Madison Keys opened her 2026 season on January 9 at the Brisbane International, where she fell to Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals.
