Just In: Canadian Open spark outrage with controversial statement after all play cancelled
Canadian Open organisers have faced backlash after all singles play was cancelled in Montreal on Monday. The two quarter-final matches in the bottom half of the men’s singles draw were scheduled to take place on Centre Court not before 6pm local time, involving Luciano Darderi, Brandon Nakashima, Rafael Jodar, and Arthur Fils. However, rain and thunderstorms were forecast for Monday evening.
It meant that neither quarter-final match got played, and both have been postponed to a new day session on Tuesday. And ticketholders have been left raging after learning they would not receive any refunds, exchanges or credit, with their tickets valid for the new session on Tuesday.

In a statement shared on Monday, organisers wrote: “Due to weather conditions, session 18 (Monday, August 10) has been postponed to tomorrow, Tuesday, August 11, at 12:30 p.m. Today’s tickets are valid for tomorrow – No exchanges, no credits, or refunds will be issued.
“Session 19, scheduled for Tuesday, August 11 at 4 p.m., will now begin at 6 p.m. with the presentation of two singles matches. An updated schedule will be shared shortly.”
A new Centre Court schedule for Tuesday starts at 12.30pm local time with Darderi vs Nakashima, while Jodar vs Fils will take place not before 2pm. Monday evening ticket holders are able to attend this session.
The night session begins at 6pm with Jakub Mensik vs Ben Shelton, followed by Daniel Merida vs Learner Tien. But some who had tickets for Monday have voiced their frustration after learning they could not get a refund, even if they cannot attend the new day session on Tuesday.

As play has now been rescheduled for the middle of a weekday, many pointed out that they had to work. “no refunds, but i cannot make it tomorrow as it’s a work day,” @ushtrasanam wrote.
There is also doubles action on the Rogers Court. A match between French duo Theo Arribage and Albano Olivetti, who took on Fabian Marozsan and Daniil Medvedev, was suspended due to the weather at the end of the first set. The French pair needed an hour to take it 7-6(4).
