Meghan Markle’s 3-word remark about Princess Kate shows how much times have changed
Meghan Markle once had kind words for her sister-in-law, Princess Kate. In the early days of her royal life, the Duchess of Sussex appeared to have a warm relationship with the Princess of Wales, joining her and Prince William at public events alongside Prince Harry. The two couples were often referred to as the “Fab Four” and even worked together on joint charitable projects.
Meghan smiled alongside Kate at royal engagements and spoke positively about her in interviews. But behind the scenes, tensions were already building and the relationship has changed dramatically over the years. The Duke of Sussex, 40, stepped back from royal life with Meghan in 2020. Since then, their connection with the rest of the Royal Family has broken down, with no sign of reconciliation.
Meghan’s warm three-word comment came during a BBC interview with Mishal Husain in 2017, shortly after her engagement to Prince Harry.
When Harry said William and Kate were keen to meet Meghan, the Suits star added: “She’s been wonderful.”
It was a brief but warm remark that, at the time, suggested everything was on good terms between the two women.
But during a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan gave a different version of events.
She addressed reports claiming she made Kate cry before the wedding and said: “The reverse happened.”
Meghan said Kate apologised and she forgave her, but admitted the incident changed how she was viewed publicly.
Meghan also sensationally claimed that palace aides worked harder to protect Kate from bad press. “If you love her, you don’t need to hate me, and if you love me, you don’t need to hate her”, she told Oprah.
What’s more, in his 2023 memoir Spare, Harry described a meeting at Nottingham Cottage in 2018 where he alleges Meghan tried to resolve the tension.
He wrote in his bombshell tell-all memoir that Kate believed Meghan had wanted her fashion contacts, which Meghan denied.
He also claimed William and Kate were upset about not receiving Easter presents – something Harry said had never been a family tradition between him and his brother.
He wrote: “Easter presents? Was that a thing? Willy and I had never exchanged Easter presents. Pa always made a big deal about Easter, sure, but that was Pa. Still, if Willy and Kate were upset, we apologized.
Harry also wrote that William and Kate changed their seats at the wedding reception, swapping their place cards because they didn’t like the American tradition of couples sitting next to each other.
Their table was the only one where spouses were seated apart. William and Kate have never addressed any of the claims Harry made in Spare about them publicly.
Now, it seems the two couples are no longer in contact. According to The Mirror, Harry did not meet with William, Kate or King Charles during his visit to London earlier this month for a court hearing over his UK security arrangements.
It is now thought that Harry has not seen his father, King Charles, in person for 14 months.
