Alexandra Eala opened up on why she decided to put a hold on competing in the doubles event alongside Venus Williams at the DC Open. The pair received a wildcard to enter the tournament. However, Eala’s name did not appear in the draw.
The world No. 28 revealed that her decision was based on not feeling physically, emotionally, and mentally ready to compete in both events.
Eala and Williams formed one of the most exciting doubles partnerships. In their first event together at the Bad Homburg Open, the Filipino star and seven-time singles Major champion reached the quarterfinal round before being bested by Olivia Nicholls and Tereza Mihalikova.
Despite their successful partnership, Eala decided to compete in only the singles event in Washington. She stated that she did not feel physically and mentally ready to compete in both events and explained that playing alongside Williams required complete commitment, which she felt unable to offer across both events at the moment.”I have so much respect for Venus. I am so grateful for every opportunity that I have to be around her, to learn from her, to hit with her. But I do think this is my first week coming back, and I think that Venus is someone who deserves a partner who can give their all physically, emotionally, mentally when they’re on court with her.”

Venus Williams praised her sister and tennis icon, Serena Williams, following her return to singles competition after nearly four years. Serena competed at the Wimbledon Championships. She was seen off by Maya Joint in the first round. At the media day ahead of the DC Open, Venus praised her sister despite the latter’s early exit at the Wimbledon Championships.
She played stellar in that match. I believe her level was extraordinarily high. It was very unlucky. Sometimes you face players who are on a streak and don’t seem to maintain that level afterward. They will have to ask her what’s next, but she looks great.”
Venus Williams is competing in the doubles event at the Mubadala DC Open alongside the Paris Olympics silver medalist Diana Shnaider.
