Exclusive: Prince William and Princess Kate ‘will update the monarchy’ for one key reason

Prince William and Princess Kate are taking the monarchy in a new direction, says one royal expert. Pauline Maclaran provided an exclusive assessment to the Mirror US , based on a recent 60 Minutes Australia special about William.

During the interview, Jason Knauf, former communications secretary, talked about working with the Waleses and hinted at what’s to come.

Maclaran, co-author of Royal Fever and Professor of Marketing and Consumer Research at Royal Holloway, University of London, said: “There are indications that they may change some of the ways things are done when they become King and Queen.

She added: “This is a very positive message for a younger audience, that they will update the monarchy and make it more fit for purpose in contemporary times.

The royals are considered public servants and as part of their roles they carry out royal engagements, bringing attention to the organizations they are visiting and in some cases they are patrons.

And while senior working members of the Royal Family will still carry out their royal engagements, William and Kate are putting more focus on their causes, for example, homelessness and early childhood initiatives, respectively.

During the interview, which aired on Sunday night, Knauf said when it comes to William that “what you see is what you get” and that “he is reinventing the role for the generation he serves.”

Knauf did not provide specifics, but Maclaran shared her takeaways from the interview

She said: “It paints a very good picture of the couple, emphasizing their family life and how they juggle their roles to accommodate this.”

At first glance, it was very surprising that a former aide would speak on behalf of the Waleses, but according to Maclaran, she believes this was signed off on in advance and William and Kate knew the interview would be happening.

Maclaran said: “Overall, this interview and the program is excellent PR for the future King and Queen!”

She added: “I am sure it will be on their radar and monitored closely by their current advisers.”
