Imagine someone telling you they can make you the best player in the world, but there’s a catch: you have to dress up like them. Sounds bizarre, right? Well, this is exactly what happened in one of the most hilarious interactions on the tennis circuit recently. The legendary John McEnroe, known for his larger-than-life personality both on and off the court, had an amusing proposition for Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev.
McEnroe and Medvedev appeared in an advertisement for the Australian Trading Company Pepperstone. In the advertisement, the former American tennis player can be seen in his iconic look of the 80s Wimbledon. McEnroe – a three-time champion at SW19 – is remembered by fans for his ringlet curled auburn locks, which he often sported with a stretchy headband. To the surprise of fans, he wants Medvedev to adopt a similar look.
Interacting in the advert, McEnroe can be seen asking the Russian player to improve his gameplay. “Hey Hey Daniil, You Are Doing it all wrong!” When the World No. 5 refuted claiming he is one of the best players in the World, McEnroe gave a cheeky reply. “Exactly, one of. But I have got an idea, to make you number 1.” Interestingly, the ‘idea’ was to make Medvedev appear like the former player who can soon be seen in similar curled locks. While the advert is nothing short of hilarious, it failed to make the Russian star ecstatic.
In the same ad, when McEnroe enquired how Daniil was feeling, he said, “I feel ridiculous.” He can soon be seen dropping his racquets and walking out of the courts. Meanwhile, the commercial, which wants to portray the message of “Don’t be fine with it,” has definitely done its job. Kudos to the creative minds! Interestingly, the Wimbledon campaign is surrounded by humor and a pinch of embarrassment for the Russian player.

Daniil Medvedev is known for his hot-headed demeanor which he has depicted from time to time. One such moment was observed during his second-round clash at Wimbledon against Alexandre Muller.
Playing on the Centre Court, the Russian tennis star hilariously sat down during the first set of his game with Alexandre Muller at Wimbledon when it hadn’t finished. This took place after Muller was causing his opponent plenty of problems. Medvedev was seen furious as he stormed off to his seat while gesturing and yelling in the direction of his coaches. However, he quickly realized the tiebreak wasn’t over and embarrassingly hurried back to his position on the court.
While the tennis player has been surrounded by such a hilarious situation in his Wimbledon campaign, his latest advert is surely a cherry on top. For Medvedev, it will be interesting to see if he can pounce again against Jan-Lennard Struff and continue his upward trajectory.
