FOR a couple who so brilliantly control their own narrative, such a devastating family feud was never part of the script.

That their beloved eldest son, Brooklyn, is 3,500 miles away, happily forging a life for himself, unquestionably is a bitter blow to the once untouchable family brand.

But forget the money, the deals, the picture perfect Instagram profiles: David and Victoria would do ANYTHING in their power to heal this rift.

Sure, they’re doing the stiff upper lip thing – carefree social media posts, business as usual, etc – but make no mistake, this is a couple utterly reeling from such a public rejection by their firstborn.

First, he blocks them on Insta, now he’s requested the couple communicate only through lawyers. This is a boy who, for whatever reason, clearly feels wronged.

Bizarrely, this feud has earned all parties concerned a raft of sympathisers because it is just so, so humanly relatable. (Of course, most regular families don’t have the luxury of £800-an-hour attorneys.)

Having reported on and interviewed both David and Victoria several times over the past 20 years, sometimes I think I know more about this couple than I do my own parents.

This is a boy who, for whatever reason, clearly feels wronged.

They are both brilliant: fun, quick, media-savvy and hugely self-aware. But for all the accolades, the Coutts bank accounts and the adoration – David can no longer go to the supermarket, his mum Sandra told me, because he has to stop every 20 seconds for a selfie – they work so well because family is everything. This, not fame, is their common denominator.

Ahead of her Netflix show release in October, Victoria told me she so considers herself a “mum first”, wife and businesswoman second and third.

David, for his part, put British Metrosexual Man on the map: he single-handedly made it cool for dads to hold hands with their kids. He also, famously, has their names and nicknames tattooed across his body: a physical sign of his devotion.

But I have also met Brooklyn – and there does not appear to be a malicious bone in his 26-year-old body. He is sweet and utterly without guile.

I first met him when he was 18 at private members’ club, Shoreditch House, and he was endearingly shy – not a whiff of arrogant nepo-baby about him.

He also attended his dad’s Netflix premiere in October 2023 – one of the family’s last public appearances – and was charming to all.

David and Victoria have raised four kind, polite, beautiful kids. And credit to them for instilling a work ethic in each, making them take part-time jobs and refusing to let them live a life of luxury without graft.

Some people will accuse Brooklyn of being petty with this latest move.

But we must remember he has grown up in the spotlight, and Gen Z’s entire life is online. “Blocking”, ergo, is his language, social media his currency, and by sending a legal letter, he is, clearly, trying to claw back some control.

His parents’ constant “tagging” felt overwhelming, I am told.

But equally, David and Victoria, I understand, feel at their wits’ end; that an Instagram mention was their only way to demonstrably prove to Brooklyn he was in their thoughts. Damned if they did, damned if they didn’t.

Heartbreaking as it is, I can see why this feud has escalated. It has been crossed wire after crossed wire. Frustration after frustration.

Today, we learn that Brooklyn has been quietly in touch with his grandparents, not wishing to punish them for what is happening. I understand David and Victoria are aware of this latest development and are fully supportive.

This must be a huge relief and suggests that maybe, just maybe, there IS a way forward…
