The Queen is to miss the ceremonial welcome during the Qatari state visit due to the lingering side effects of a chest infection, but will attend other elements of the day, Buckingham Palace has announced.
Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and his consort have arrived in the UK for a two-day state visit hosted by King Charles, during which he will also meet Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.
It is understood the original programme has been tweaked because it is understood Queen Camilla, who had a chest infection after her long haul trip to Australia and Samoa, has been advised to rest and recover fully by doctors.
Camilla will miss the outdoor event on the Horse Guards Parade where the King and the Prince and Princess of Wales will join the Emir of Qatar and his wife on December 3.
On the Horse Guards Parade, The Amir and Sheikha Jawaher will receive a Ceremonial Welcome before being formally welcomed by the King at the Royal Pavilion.
Following the presentations, the Guard of Honour will give a Royal Salute and the Qatari National Anthem will be played. The monarch will accompany the Amir as he inspects the Guard of Honour, formed of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, with the Band of the Regiment.
The Prince and the Princess of Wales alongside the King, a well as the Amir and Sheikha Jawaher, will participate in a carriage procession along The Mall to Buckingham Palace, where they will be met by a second Guard of Honour formed of 1st Battalion Welsh Guards with the Band of the Irish Guards, who will play the Qatari and British National Anthems.
The Qatari royals, who stay until Wednesday, December 4, will enjoy lunch at Buckingham Palace before attending a special exhibition in the Picture Gallery of items from the Royal Collection Trust and Turquoise Mountain Foundation relating to Qatar.
Camilla will be present at the lunch at the Palace on the royal party’s return and is hoping to view an exhibition in the Picture Gallery too.
In the afternoon, they will visit Westminster Abbey, where they will take a tour of the abbey, accompanied by the Dean of Westminster and the Chapter.
Their next stop will be the Palace of Westminster where he will be greeted on arrival by Black Rod, the Lord Great Chamberlain, the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Lord Speaker.
In the Royal Robing Room, the Amir will address gathered Parliamentarians and other invited guests before joining a reception with Members of the House of Lords and Members of Parliament.
According to the Palace, the day will conclude with a glittering State Banquet hosted by the King and Queen at Buckingham Palace.
Camilla will join the King and their guests for photographs at the start of the banquet in the evening, and attend the banquet itself, but because she is still recovering, she will take a short break before dinner.
