Carole Middleton didn’t plot to fix Kate with Prince William: but she did do…

A royal expert had dismissed the depiction of Carole Middleton in The Crown as a “meddlesome” mother, however they admit she may have had a hand in making Kate a suitable bride for Prince William.

On December 14 the final six episodes of the sixth and final series of the royal drama series were dropped on Netflix, with one of the biggest storylines being the love story between William and Kate.

The future King and Queen first met as students at St Andrews University in Scotland, which they both attended from 2001 until 2005.

Royal expert Dr Tessa Dunlop told The Mirror that Carole Middleton’s matchmaking in the show may be a little excessive, as she believes The Crown’s creator Peter Morgan used her character to bring tension to the episodes.

She told the publication: “Speculation has long persisted that Kate swapped her first choice of Edinburgh University for St Andrews when she heard that William was heading there.

Heaven forefends that a girl might engage in a bit of daydreaming and future-proofing. But in The Crown, the real driver behind the romance is Carole Middleton, a self-made businesswoman who was once an air hostess; again Peter Morgan picks on an outsider to deliver the tension.

“It is Carole not Kate who delivers the (social-climbing) match-making narrative. It is meddlesome Carole who is dreaming of a royal wedding long before her daughter.
“Prophetically she tells Kate, ‘never think there is anything in this world that you are not good enough for’.”

However, while the drama series is a fictionalised account inspired by real events, Dr Dunlop believes Carole may have inadvertently prepared Kate for life as a princess.

She explained: “It was much easier for the series to focus on William’s early struggles and love life, the details of which, as heir to the throne, he is unlikely to ever divulge. Was it Kate or her mother who initially dreamt of a royal wedding?

We will never know exactly what role Carole Middleton played, but we can confirm that she successfully pulled the Middleton family up by the financial boots straps.

“Kate enjoyed all the trappings of an upper-class life: including a stint at Malborough College where she honed the perfect accomplishments and friendships for a future princess.

When it comes to bagging a royal, money talks. Whether deliberately or accidentally, perhaps Carole Middleton played Cupid after all.”

William and Kate as university students are played by Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy respectively, while Carole Middleton is portrayed by Eve Best.

One of the moments to feature in the new series is the now infamous student fashion show in March 2002, where Kate reportedly won over William by wearing a sheer dress on the catwalk.
