Prince William Revealed His Biggest ‘Relief’ After Finally Proposing to Kate Middleton

Prince William and Kate Middleton are a love story for the ages. The Prince and Princess of Wales have been together for more than 20 years; they met while attending the University of St. Andrews, and these days, they share three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

But it all started with a date, and later came a proposal. And during the couple’s engagement interview, William shared the one thing he was most relieved about — and it wasn’t the proposal itself.

Prince William was relieved that he and Kate Middleton didn’t have to keep their engagement a secret
William and Kate did their best to keep their relationship private while they were dating. The two were dating secretly for a while before even telling any of their friends, and they were together for more than a year before they debuted their relationship to the public (it happened when Kate attended a ski trip with the couple in 2004). William and Kate did go through a couple of breakups during their youth, but they ultimately realized they were right for each other.

By 2010, William was ready to pop the question. He and Kate were on a trip to Africa, and he decided on a whim that it was the perfect moment. After it happened, they told close family and friends, but they had to keep it a secret for a little while until the royal family could schedule a proper announcement, photoshoot, and interview.

During the interview, which was the last of the three things to happen, William said that his biggest relief of all was just not having to keep the engagement under wraps for any longer.

“We’re like sort of ducks, very calm on the surface with little feet going under the water,” William said of the couple keeping quiet about the big news. “It’s been really exciting. We’ve been talking about it for a long time so for us, it’s a real relief and it’s really nice to be able to tell everybody.

Prince William and Kate Middleton had a public wedding in 2011
William and Kate pulled out all the stops for their nuptials; they were only engaged for about five months, but they somehow pulled off one of the priciest, most elegant weddings of all time.

These days, William and Kate are parents of three growing kids, and they are fully focused on two things: raising a family and becoming king and queen. William has previously said that he is in no rush to take the throne — likely because he and Kate are waiting for the kids to grow up a little more.
