Princess Charlotte’s name has a secret meaning for both the Royal Family and Princess Kate’s family
While it is clear Princess Charlotte’s full name – Charlotte Elizabeth Diana – has a touching tribute to female members of the young royal’s family, it appears the nine-year-old’s name was also chosen with her grandfather, King Charles, in mind.
With her middle name being a combination of Elizabeth, after the late Queen, and Diana, after her grandmother the late Princess Diana, not many people are aware of the hidden meaning behind her first name.
Although Charlotte is primarily the name of a girl, The Mirror reported that it is also the feminine version of Charles, the name of her grandfather the King.
This suggests that the name Prince William and Princess Kate chose for their only daughter was made with the 75-year-old monarch in mind.
As well as being a nod to more modern royals, the name Charlotte has been used before in the Royal Family and was once the name of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the longest-ever ruling Queen Consort of Great Britain from 1761 until she died in 1818 during her marriage to George III.
While the princess’ name may be a sweet nod to members of Prince William’s Royal Family, Charlotte’s forename and middle names are also believed to have been made with the Middleton family in mind.
According to the Daily Mail, Charlotte is also the middle name of Princess Kate’s only sister Pippa Middleton, who she shares a close bond with.
When it comes to Charlotte’s middle name, Elizabeth is also a name used by the Middleton family for generations.
As well as being Princess Kate’s own middle name, her mother, Carole Middleton’s middle name is also Elizabeth, with the name having been passed down the family tree after the death of Carole’s grandmother, Elizabeth Harrison, who died when Kate was just nine years old.
Charlotte’s name is therefore considered to be a sweet nod to both sides of the family, who all have a close bond with the young princess.
As well as spending plenty of time with the Royal Family, including the all-important Christmas Day at Sandringham hosted by the monarch, the princess also sees her grandparents Carole and Michael Middleton frequently.
The bond is believed to have developed even more this year after Princess Kate’s cancer diagnosis, with Carole stepping in to help her daughter and son-in law look after the three children.
A source close to Carole and Michael Middleton told the Independent: “Carole has been the driving force keeping the family together with minimum fuss and maximum modesty. She’s ferried and fetched George, Louis and Charlotte, taken them to school sports matches and given them endless support. She’s been a real Mary Poppins-like figure.
