Michael Schumacher’s wife Corinna can be seen struggling to hold back tears in a trailer for a new documentary set to reveal fresh details about the Formula One legend’s remarkable ascent to stardom. The 57-year-old, who wed Schumacher in 1995, will speak about her husband in the forthcoming Netflix documentary, which examines his journey to becoming a worldwide phenomenon.
‘Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend’ launches globally on the streaming platform on October 2 and chronicles the turbulent and defining 1994 F1 season. That year saw Schumacher, then aged 25, secure the first of his seven World Championship titles, as ‘Schumi Mania’ swept through his homeland of Germany.
Key figures from Schumacher’s inner circle and the F1 world – including his former manager Willi Webe, ex-Benetton boss Flavio Briatore and previous F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone – have participated in the documentary, with Corinna offering intimate perspectives on her marriage.
“Not many people know Michael the way I know him,” she reveals in the documentary’s trailer, which also addresses the devastating losses of three-time world champion Ayrton Senna and Austrian newcomer Roland Ratzenberger at that year’s San Marino Grand Prix. “That was the first time we thought ‘This is actually dangerous. [But] you can’t stop a real racer from driving”.
Whether Corinna will offer any fresh update on her husband’s current state of health remains to be seen, with the F1 icon now requiring round-the-clock medical care following life-altering injuries sustained in a skiing accident in December 2013. Having struck his head on a rock while skiing in the French Alps, Schumacher was placed in a medically induced coma for several months before returning to the family home on Lake Geneva the following year.
In the nearly 13 years since that fateful day, only a handful of those closest to him have known the true extent of his condition, with concrete details remaining scarce despite an endless stream of rumours, reports and shocking blackmail attempts.
Corinna has worked relentlessly to safeguard her husband’s privacy at all costs, permitting only medical professionals and a select few individuals to visit him. In a Netflix documentary back in 2021, she explained: “We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does.
“And we are getting on with our lives. It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.”
It has since been reported that only three people – outside of family and medical professionals – are permitted to visit him, with that trusted trio said to include Ferrari stalwarts Jean Todt and Ross Brawn, along with former driver Gerhard Berger. Todt is understood to make monthly visits, yet has only revealed that “there’s no longer the same communication as before” with Schumacher.
“The family has decided not to answer the question [regarding Schumacher’s condition], a choice that I respect,” he told Italian publication La Repubblica. “I see him regularly and with affection, him and his family. Our bond goes beyond the past work. It is part of my life, which today is very far from Formula 1.”
