Reason Why Kate Middleton’s Daughter Princess Charlotte Hasn’t Worn a Tiara Yet — and When She Will
Kate Middleton and Prince William’s daughter, Princess Charlotte, is destined for her first tiara appearance, and the moment is closer than many realize.
The 10-year-old may hold the title of princess, but that does not mean wearing a tiara comes automatically. Traditionally, British princesses and women marrying into the royal family wear their first tiara on their wedding day, though that rule was famously broken when her great-aunts, Princess Margaret and Princess Anne, wore tiaras as teenagers.
Therefore, Charlotte’s tiara moment could come within the next eight years, and well before her mother, Kate’s, first royal accessory. However, since Kate was not a royal by blood, she wasn’t allowed to wear a tiara until her wedding day to Prince William, in April 2011.
GB News spoke to jewelry maker Anna Byers, who shared her thoughts about when the young royal may wear her first sparkling crown, and what piece she will choose from the royal vault. Byers said the moment could come as soon as Charlotte turns 18.
“Princess Charlotte will most likely wear her first tiara at 18,” the jeweler said. “I would anticipate her choosing the Cartier Halo Tiara, which her mother, the Princess of Wales, wore for her own first tiara moment at her 2011 wedding to the Prince of Wales.”
She added, “The tiara also has a lovely royal history. It was an 18th birthday present to the late Queen from her parents and has often been loaned to younger royals, including Princess Margaret and Princess Anne in their youth. Choosing the piece would be a fitting tribute to three generations of royals.”
PEOPLE Magazine reported that Margaret first wore Queen Mary‘s Diamond Lozenge Bandeau in 1948 at 18. Anne was 17, one year younger, when she accompanied her mother, Queen Elizabeth, to open Parliament in 1967, wearing the Cartier Halo Tiara.
The outlet noted that because both Margaret and Anne were working royals from a young age, they were allowed to wear the diamond-encrusted headwear. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether William and Kate allow their daughter to take on more royal roles before she comes of age and whether or not that will allow her to accessorize with a piece of royal history atop her head.
Royal watchers believed Charlotte might make her tiara debut at King Charles’ coronation in 2023. Instead, the young royal wore a sparkling silver-and-crystal floral headband that coordinated with her mother, Kate Middleton. The accessory was created by Jess Collett in collaboration with Alexander McQueen.
While royal watchers may have to wait, Princess Charlotte’s first tiara appearance is inevitable. When it finally happens, it will signal a new chapter for the young princess.
