Just In: Royal family in Turmoil As King Charles in ‘painful’ dilemma Over monarchy’s fate rests on brutal key decision
King Charles is faced with a crucial decision as the monarch is torn between his loyalty to the throne and his role as a father who was betrayed by his son.
Prince Harry claimed last month that his cancer-stricken father has not been speaking to him while finally making a reconciliation plea with the royals. Now, the Duke of Sussex has reportedly have lined up invites to be sent to the Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace as he brings the Invictus Games back to UK in 2027.
However, a royal expert believes that while this will “undoubtedly be seen as a gesture of reconciliation by the Sussexes,” it has actually put the monarch in a very difficult predicament.
“This clearly places the King in an extremely difficult position, which is precisely what it is meant to do and probably why the venue was chosen,” royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams wrote in Express.co.uk.
The Invictus Games, which Harry founded in 2014, is a sporting event for injured and sick veterans. Charles, along with Prince William and Kate Middleton, had shown immense support to kickstart the project.
Fitzwilliams pointed out that the King is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Invictus is a major military charity.
“As head of state, [Charles] is a symbol of national unity. If he accepts, he would be putting duty above what obviously is a painful public rift between him and his family and the Sussexes. It will be argued that that is his job,” he explained.
The expert noted that ‘reconciliation’ is something that the public is rooting for but it is a much more complicated issue.
“It might involve extremely serious problems for the Royal Family, who rightly do not trust the Sussexes. If the King accepted it, this would involve public contact with Harry and almost certainly Meghan and his grandchildren, Archie and Lili.”
However, as much as the King would want to dote on his grandchildren, the “bitter rift” goes deeper after brutal attacks on the world’s most high-profile institution.
A report by The Telegraph claimed that senior aides at the Buckingham Palace are discussing the potential appearance as it could represent the monarch in positive light as a ‘peacemaker’. It remains to be seen how the royals will address the matter in July 2027.
