Queen Camilla ’emotional’ as she prepares to join King Charles, William and Kate
Queen Camilla will be “emotional” as she prepares to join King Charles, Prince William and Princess Kate for the 80th anniversary celebrations of VE Day this May, according to a royal commentator.
The royals will reportedly join hundreds of veterans and their families for the historic occasion, although the Palace is yet to confirm their attendance.
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Prime Minister are also expected at the event to honour those who served.
Camilla, 77, will join the monarch, 76, in leading a special Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey.
Royal commentator Jennie Bond explained that Camilla will be remembering her father, who fought during World War Two.
She said: “It will be emotional for everyone.
The King will have so many memories of his father’s wartime service and his mother’s short time in the Auxiliary Territorial Service.
“Camilla will have similar memories of her own father.
Bruce Shand, Camilla’s father, was a distinguished soldier taken as a prisoner of war in Germany before winning a military cross for gallantry during the Battle of Dunkirk.
At last year’s D-Day remembrance service, Queen Camilla was visibly emotional as the Queen listened to a veteran speak about his story.
Camilla also spoke fondly in February 2024, revealing how her love of reading began as a child when her father would read bedtime stories to her.
Bond said: “I’m sure they will all find it an emotional occasion.
The expert added: “Charles, in particular, finds pageantry and music extremely moving.
“I don’t think he, or Camilla or William and Catherine, will be shy about showing their emotions.”
Bond suggested that the occasion “will be one of the most important days in the royal calendar this year.”
She concluded: “The handful of veterans will be the centrepiece of the events, of course, but this is a hugely important day for the Royal Family. They all take their links to the military very seriously, even if they have not served.
