The Prince of Wales once had a heartbreaking wish about what career he would choose when he grew up despite being in line to the throne, and it was all to do with his mother, the late Princess Diana.
Prince William, the eldest son of King Charles and Princess Diana, was second in line to the British throne when he was born in June 1982, which meant that he had his whole life mapped out for him as the future King before he even took his first steps.
But that did not stop him from taking an interest in a different career, a passion he now shares with his own eldest son, Prince George.
Royal biographer Andrew Morton wrote in his book, Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words, that both Prince William and Prince Harry had a conversation with their mother about their future when they were little.
Mr Morton wrote: “William and Harry, now ten and nearly eight respectively, are now aware of their destiny. On one occasion the boys were discussing their futures with Diana.
When I grow up I want to be a policeman and look after you mummy,’ said William lovingly.
“Quick as a flash Harry replied, with a note of triumph in his voice, ‘Oh no you can’t, you’ve got to be king.'”
Prince George also had different aspirations when he was younger, according to his dad, William.
During a reception at Kensington Palace honouring Scotland Yard in 2018, William met with youth engagement officer with the Met Police Jayne Richardson.
She said at the time of her meeting with the prince: “We’re only based just down the road in Kensington and I said to him ‘Perhaps Prince George and Princess Charlotte could join the police cadets.
She claimed William replied: “[George] is obsessed, actually, by the police… cars, toys, everything.
A year earlier, while on a walkabout in Helsinki, Finland, William gave George’s letter to Santa Claus and said: “I’ve seen you and I had to give you this letter.
“He hasn’t written down many requests, so I think one request is probably ok.”
The young prince had asked for one thing – a police car.
