Dame Anna Wintour has broken her silence over rumours Princess Kate was offered global covers with Vogue.
Fashion editor Dame Anna spoke at a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony after she was made a Companion of Honour in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours list for her services to fashion.
Dame Anna, who was dressed in Alexander McQueen, was asked whether it was true the Princess of Wales was offered global covers with Vogue. She said with a smile: “Yeah, I don’t know where those (rumours) have come from, do you?”
The comment comes after it was reported the fashion giant personally sent Kate an offer to grace Vogue’s much-coveted front cover.
The Mail on Sunday reported last month that a deal with Kate mean she could choose her own photographer, be in charge of styling and decide if she wanted to do an interview for the magazine.
Kate, 43, first appeared on the cover of the UK edition of Vogue in 2016 as the magazine marked its centenary issue with a cover shoot of the then Duchess of Cambridge.
The princess donned rural garb for that appearance, with 10 pages of photos emphasising Kate’s love of the countryside.
It has been reported that the latest offer was for Kate to appear on the cover of both the British and American editions of Vogue.
An unnamed source told the Mail Kate’s “brave battle” against cancer while raising three young children in the public eye has made her a role model to millions.
They added: “Her story would be an inspiration to so many women going through what she has gone through. She would get to chose which covers she would feature on but the UK and the US would be a given.
Both King Charles and the Princess of Wales were treated for cancer last year, with Kate now in remission and the monarch having ongoing treatment.
Kate’s appearance on the cover of Vogue followed Diana, the late Princess of Wales’s four covers for the global fashion magazine. Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, also guest edited the publication in 2019 under the then Editor-in-Chief, Edward Enninful.
The Duchess, however, did not grace the front cover. Instead, she put portrait photographs of female game-changers on the cover, including the former prime minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, and climate activist, Greta Thunberg.
Dame Anna, who has held the position of editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988, flew in from Dubai for the Buckingham Palace ceremony.
In addition to her remarks about Kate, Dame Anna, 75, said: “It’s wonderful to be back at Buckingham Palace and I was completely surprised and overwhelmed to be given this great honour.
“The last time I was here the Queen gave me a medal and we both agreed that we had been doing our job a very long time, and then this morning His Majesty asked me if this meant I was going to stop working and I said firmly, no.
